Older people will "rebel and risk prison" if they are forced to remain in lockdown longer while restrictions are eased, a former Tory pensions minister has warned.
Conservative peer Baroness Altmann argued such a requirement would be "age discrimination" and could cost lives as well as threaten social unrest.
Her comments come amid growing concern the over-70s could be told to isolate for longer than the rest of the population when the rules to cope with COVID-19 start to be relaxed.
The government has previously said people in this age group are especially vulnerable to coronavirus.
Speaking to Sky News' Sophy Ridge On Sunday programme, the former pensions minister said: "I certainly hope as we move out of the curent emergency phase of lockdown there won't be some kind of blanket policy to forbid people of any particular age from leaving their own homes or from being part of the community.
"Using an age-based criteria would be fundamentally wrong and actually would potentially cost the lives of many people, and risks social unrest."
"There are many over-70s who can't bear the thought of having to stay in lockdown a moment longer and have accepted it because everyone else has got to do it.

‘And shed that clothing you jerk.’
awww...wake up on the wrong side of bed, did we...? remember, milk and cookies help...
‘It is important to wear these face coverings or masks in situations where it is difficult to maintain a social distance of six feet from others.
which exactly is the same thing I said; that the six feet, nor the mask, is the controlling rule...the poster I responded to said just the opposite...
Friend of mine who has lived in Japan for many years informed me most people who have been wearing masks all these years simply do it because their is a major pollen issue in Japan as a result of all the cedars. Just a FYI. cheers
WE are the governing authority. We elect our representatives and we can fire them. WE are the government. They have forgotten that they are servants, not rulers.
The older people who are more likely to die from Covid won’t lock down but people who have almost no risk of dying have to lock down
I understand and I agree with you. That is why I will be trying to help LePage replace Governor Mills here in Maine in our next election.
I just am not going to punch someone in the face who is wearing a mask (they may even be a God fearing brother in Christ who wants to obey the authorities) but I will explain to them why I am not wearing one.
Do you worry about the person who does not feel sick and decides that there is no need to wear a mask? Would you worry if you knew that same person died in ICU six days later from COVID-19?
Is this how we as a nation want people to be: vulnerable, exploited, and given no respect?
Annie Grant, 55, had been feverish for two nights. Worried about the coronavirus outbreak, her adult children had begged her to stay home rather than return to the frigid poultry plant in Georgia where she had been on the packing line for nearly 15 years, earning $12.50/hour.
But on the third day she was ill, they got a text from their mother. They told me I had to come back to work, it said.
Ms. Grant ended up returning home, and died in a hospital on Thursday morning after fighting for her life on a ventilator for more than a week. Two other workers at the Tyson Foods poultry plant where she worked in Camilla, Ga., have also died in recent days. They say safety first. Where was the concern for their safety? Where was the respect—the dignity?
How is the mask on the left Muslim-esque? It looks like a run of the mill plaid pattern. Or, is it the person wearing it, who perhaps resembles (or is) Lindsey Lohan? I'm not sure because of the mask, haha.
Are you living off the grid, on a homestead?
ROTFLMAO . . .
Nice try but you ain’t foolin’ anyone.
I guess that person is willing to play Russian roulette.
I didn't "try" anything, other than confront your own hypocrisy. You convicted yourself, all on your own.
Like I say, nice try but you ain't foolin' anyone.
Keep voting liberal and nothing will change. Probably get much worse. The dems have shown their true colors but voters may be colorblind. November will tell the whole story.
Plus the elderly tend to be conservative.
