Keep an eye out for a shiny new quarter with a raised image of fruit bats and be careful not to let the coin fly out of your wallet or pocket.

As part of the U.S. Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters Program, the new National Parks quarter dollar celebrates American Samoa and on the relief features a mother fruit bat and her pup hanging upside down.

IIRC, fruit bats are harmless to humans. They have large eyes, long noses, fly by day & and walk or swim on their wings. They are canine, not vampirine, are kept as pets and live on bananas.

But why a fruit bat is on U.S. coinage, I don’t know.

Fruit bats are not native to the US.

Fruit bats are certainly very different from the microbats in the Continental USA. In many places they are called “flying foxes” rather than bats, and unfortunately for them, they taste like chicken. They are/were eaten in Guam, as well as the Northern Marianas Islands, Samoa and other places in the South Pacific.

This series of collectible quarters is another way to sequester dollars.

Every coin or paper bill withheld from circulation is money saved by the US Treasury.

No kidding.

As I understand it, bats are very useful for insect control.

Still ugly critters. I hope none of these coins finds its way into my pocket.

Our neighborhood has tons of bats. Not sure where they actually live but right at sundown right before it gets dark you can see them swooping over our pool feeding on insects.

This has to be the silliest conspiracy theory I’ve seen on FR.

The fruit bats are cute, not-so-little guys, and excellent parents. These ones are from Australia - some of the megabats can grow to have up to a 5-foot wingspan:

The Fruit Bat figures importantly in Samoan mythology. It makes sense that a coin celebrating American Samoa would feature this bat - especially as the animal is becoming endangered. I think all the artists and designers did a wonderful job on this coin.

The order Chiroptera appears to make up almost one-fourth of the mammal species on Earth.

I figure the Lord put them here so extravagantly for a good reason.
