Two U.S. warships in two days have sailed through separate disputed island chains in the South China Sea in a challenge to territorial claims, in what the U.S. Navy calls freedom of navigation operations.
Beijing on April 28 said it had expelled the USS Barry, a guided-missile destroyer, from the seas around the Paracel Islands, which it claims as its own territory, saying Chinas sovereignty had been violated.
The U.S. Navy disputed the story, however, saying that the warship had carried out its operation successfully.
The following day the Navy dispatched a larger cruiser, the USS Bunker Hill, through the Spratly island chain, where Beijing has built up militarized bases.
The USS Bunker Hill on April 29 asserted navigational rights and freedoms in the Spratly Islands, consistent with international law, said Commander Reann Mommsen, a spokesperson for the Navys 7th Fleet, in a statement emailed to The Epoch Times.
This freedom of navigation operation upheld the rights, freedoms, and lawful uses of the sea recognized in international law by challenging the restrictions on innocent passage imposed by China, Vietnam, and Taiwan, said Mommsen. The United States demonstrated that innocent passage may not be subject to such restrictions.
Islands, reefs, and rocks in the South China Sea are disputed by a number of countries, including Vietnam, China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan.
As long as some countries continue to claim and assert limits on rights that exceed what is provided for under international law as reflected in the Law of the Sea Convention, the United States will continue to demonstrate its resolve to uphold these rights and freedoms for all, said Mommsen. No member of the international community should be intimidated or coerced into giving up their rights and freedoms.

I call your Wuhanic Plague and up you one cruiser.
Damn Russians will probly start penetrating Alaska air space with nuclear bombers again.
Whacha gonna do?
I understand the argument for retiring the Iowa class BB’s but I do sometimes think they would be useful. In this situation nothing else quite says ESAD quite like 9 16 inch guns.
Good!
They should randomly fire cannons while they are at it.
Hey, what happened to those Iranian boats that were harassing us last week?
“I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm’s way.”
The “Tin Can Navy” is upholding the USN’s founding traditions. God Bless Them!
I don’t believe that the Russians see us as the bigger problem.
Time to tell China go to hell. Warn them to watch their step. While your are at it warn Russia that close fly by our aircraft may result a shootdown of Russia aggression.
Need to post the pics on WeChat to achieve maximum effect. :)

I tell you what would be great. Form up a flotilla consisting of one ship each from the United States, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan.
And maybe from India and Australia too.
Then sail that flotilla merrily through the South China Sea.
If any nation on the list doesnt want to participate, okay. Just tell them they are on their own in the future. And if Red China doesnt like it, tell them to file a protest with the World Court.
The protesters in Michigan and elsewhere are doing essentially the same as the Navy

The guided missile destroyer sailing into the Paracel Island area brings back a lot of memories.
Way back in 1963-4 we were the first guided missile destroyer, the USS Robison, DDG-12 (Adams class), to be sent in there. And for the same reason. The Chicoms tried to scare us away...didn’t work.
The Barry and the Bunker Hill, two great names from our Founding.
