ROSLYN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – One New York doctor claims to have kept hundreds of coronavirus patients out of the hospital with a cocktail of medications.
It’s been criticized as unproven, but now a major hospital in New York is launching a clinical trial based on the treatment, reports CBS2’s Carolyn Gusoff.
In the village of Kiryas Joel in Orange County, Dr. Vladimir Zelenko, a self-described “country doctor,” says a cocktail of medicines keeps his patients alive.
Weeks ago, he recorded this message for President Donald Trump: “I’m seeing tremendous positive results. I haven’t sent any patient to the hospital yet, even though I’ve treated hundreds already.”
Zelenko prescribes the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine but only when two other substances are added, an antibiotic and zinc.
“All the hydroxychloroquine does is open the door and let the zinc in,” said Zelenko, a board-certified family physician.
Hydroxychloroquine got the president’s attention, and swiftly got him criticism for touting unfounded cures.
“There are people dying,” said Trump at the time. “If it works, that would be great.”
It’s Zelenko’s combination of meds given early on when people first get sick that makes his protocol unique. He claims of his 400 patients at high risk for severe illness, only two died.
In New York State, though, that’s a Catch-22. To prevent shortages, pharmacists can only dispense hydroxychloroquine for severe hospital-based cases. By then, Zelenko says it’s ineffective.
“There is a very narrow window of opportunity where you can hit this virus hard and early where it makes all the difference,” said Zelenko.
Now science will weigh in. St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, NY is launching a study using essentially Zelenko’s cocktail. On newly symptomatic patients with underlying conditions, Hydroxychloroquine and zinc will be given to all of them.

For those who don’t know,Roslyn, where Dr. Zelenko’s protocol will be tested, is in my neck of the woods — Long Island, NY, not far from the City of New York itself ( just 10 minutes drive from the borough of Queens ).
HERE IS THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT:
Two groups will receive different antibiotics.
Cardiologist Dr. Avni Thakore is the study’s principal investigator.
“What we know about the mechanism of action of the drugs suggests they could be helpful early in the course of a viral infection,” said Thakore. “We know zinc is an anti-viral. We know that hydroxychloroquine can help reduce an immune response that can get out of control. We also know zinc helps the hydroxychloroquine come inside the cell.”
Administered early, rather than as a Hail Mary for the sickest which has had disappointing results, and to protect participants from any increased heart risk that have prompted safety concerns, Thakore notes “we are going to be monitoring their EKG from home.”
In all touted treatments, data is first needed, says cardiologist Dr. Alan Kadish, president of Touro College.
“All drugs have side effects and we don’t want to treat millions of people with a combination that we don’t know is safe and effective,” said Kadish.
“If we can manage this early and control it, and prevent people from getting very sick and hospitalized, that’s where we need to have good data and good science,” said Thakore.
Zelenko, who’s offered up his cases for peer review, is hopeful.
“This is an absolute revolution in how this disease will be treated,” he said.
The study will enroll 750 patients with early symptoms.

St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, NY is launching a study using essentially Zelenko’s cocktail.

Dr. Zalenko has lost only 2 patients out of over 400 and those were unfortunately lost early on before more was known about the precise protocol. The Doctor has a neighborhood practice in NYC with a “crammed in” population of 35,000. Can’t get much more high risk than this.
Zelanko is not and never was “The doctor behind the hydroxychloroquine treatment.”
Hydroxychloroquine was in use on cruise ships in 2019.
I don't know if Thakor misspoke or was misquoted, but my understanding is that the hydroxychloroquine helps the zinc come inside the cell, and the zinc kills the virus.
A number of democrat governors have limited Hydro to hospital use only....too late and worthless. The bastards should be hung as they have acted out of pure, unadulterated politics.
Hydroxychloroquine connects to iron in the red blood cells, preventing covid19 from stripping it to replicate itself.
So although hydroxychloroquine doesn’t kill covid 19, it prevents covid 19 from lowering the bloods oxygen carrying capacity as much.

THAT is the case in NY. Officially at least.
However, so many doctors are prescribing Hydroxychloroquine on an off label basis OUTSIDE of the hospital, that I am not sure that NY State is even bothering to prosecute this.
Dr. Zelenko is just one of them. With NY States decree, he should have been arrested by now, but here he is — still doing his job saving lives.

Trump and Barr should be made aware of this and tell these rouges to CEASE and DESIST.
This is a battle for control and regimentation of the population; a cure or treatment for the alleged pandemic
will thwart that.
Hence, there must be no cures, and no post-infection immunity. We ALL need to get the vaccination implant and/or documented proof of vaccination, ready to produce to any authority...

Many lazy journalist keep telling us that Hydroxychoroquine does not kill the virus.
But that is NOT what it is used for in the case of Covid-19.
The known immunomodulatory effect of hydroxychloroquine, which prevents the immune system from overreacting to a novel virus because it does not recognize it, acts in controlling the cytokine storm that occurs in infected patients.
This allows the immune system to attack the virus without doing harm to the body.
It is the patient’s own immune system that works to destroy the virus.
So, Hydroxychloroquine is NOT in any way, shape, or form an antiviral medication.
Also, Hydroxychloroquine is a ZINC ionophore. That is why ZINC is an important component in Dr. Zelenko’s treatment protocol.
It is literally a synthetic “doorway” (transporter) that allows extracellular zinc to pass into the cytoplasm, so the ZINC can destroy the virus.
THE ONLY SCIENCE HERE, IS THAT ZINC IS THE ANTIVIRAL.
Your cell membrane has naturally occurring membrane transporter proteins specifically for zinc, called zip proteins. A zinc ionophore’s function is to create additional passages into the cell for zinc.
This enables a cell to load up with zinc faster, than it normally would.
I am very surprised that the MSM CBS News would publish this piece.

Yes, he never gave himself any credit for discovering this. He REFERRED to past successful studies made in China, Korea and France. He said so in his interviews ( and I’ve hear a lot of them ).
He added ZINC to his protocol but that was it.
It is criminal that this far in we do not know for sure.

Zelenko stuck his neck out big time, and has been persecuted.
He is worthy of recognition.
Recognition for running a successful practice that saves lives, and for writing about it.
But he didn’t discover the treatment as it was already in use and so by keeping that undeniable fact in the forefront it sideswipes attempts by the left to blunt the spread of this treatment regimen by destroying Doctor Zelanko as a person.
