A POLICE officer has been left paralysed after being kicked by a drunken woman.
PC Darren Triggs, 36, needed emergency spinal surgery when a blood clot was found on his spine.
He was kicked while driving the woman to a police station but the injury did not seem serious.
Four days later the officer, with Sussex Police for 12 years, thought he was having a heart attack as his legs went numb.
Hours later the shocked couple, who have three daughters, were told the response officer - who was sent to 999 call outs - was paralysed from the chest down and would never walk again.
Darren's wife, Rosie, who works in marketing, said: We were both in absolute shock.
He loved being a police officer and helping people.
Darren showed me the bruise after the kick and you could see it clearly see it.
He wasnt in too much pain so we forgot about it.
But early in the morning four days later he woke up with a pain in his chest.
He was worried about a heart attack while I thought he had a trapped nerve, but then he was saying his legs were completely numb.
He has broken down a couple times but only because of how much he was missing our girls rather than his injury.
Darren was strong enough to watch Rosie give birth on February 4 to their third daughter, Phoebe, at the same hospital where he was recovering.
Rosie said: It was so special.
After weeks of devastation, he finally had a happy moment.
Darren has been in hospital since December 3, and will not leave until his house in Fishbourne, West Sussex, is adapted.
Colleagues raised more than £50,000 for the family and Darren will still have a job.
The woman who kicked him was cautioned but it is not certain his condition is linked to the injury.
Doctors have been known to be wrong sometimes.
There's always hope. Hope this man recovers fully one day soon.
I get concussions easily. Someone try and punch me, I shoot them. It is a question of life or death for me. Hopefully the jury will understand.
I hope so too.
“The woman who kicked him was cautioned but it is not certain his condition is linked to the injury.”
You’d never know it from the headline.
If he tested positive for Corona prior to the kick the headline could read “Husband and Father of Young Girls Paralysed after Testing Positive for Corona”
This makes a lie of the idea that men shouldn’t be allowed to defend themselves against women because women are incapable of hurting men. I wonder if this will make men decide “Time to defend my sons against a school system that allows girls to assault them for no reason.”
Agree. Wish Walter Reed could help this first responder. They have done miracles there with recovery.
