The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits has soared to more than 30 million in just six weeks of the coronavirus crisis, the Labor Department said Thursday, while President Trump blamed the economic misery on China and predicted a “very strong comeback” by the time he faces re-election in November.
More than 3.8 million people filed claims for jobless benefits last week, down slightly from the previous week but still a staggering number that had officials predicting April’s unemployment rate will climb to nearly 20%. In February, before the pandemic forced business closings and stay-at-home orders, the jobless rate was 3.5%.
The most rapid series of layoffs in U.S. history has now hit more than one in six American workers.
Consumer spending plunged 7.5% in March, the most since the Commerce Department began tracking it in 1959. It was more than triple the previous record monthly decline of 2.1%, in January 1987.
The president said of the latest jobless report, “It is what it is.”
“It’s just a very tough situation for the people of our country,” Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “We just got hit by a vicious virus that should never have been allowed to escape China. They should have stopped it at the source.”
The coronavirus, which has killed more than 62,000 Americans, originated in Wuhan, China, late last year. In an interview with Reuters this week, Mr. Trump said Beijing “will do anything they can to make me lose this race” to presumptive Democratic nominee Joseph R. Biden in November.

The completely one sided response to this virus is causing more damage. Where was the concern over the financial and domestic damage while he was killing the economy? Although death is terrible, he now has over thirty million Americans dependent on the government because they have lost their jobs.
He should also pin it on the domestic communist RATS...BIG TIME.
I expect arrests due to indisputable private communications between the dems,hillary, kerry, obama, and san fran nan with a cast of thousands in the deep state, the press and the Chinese planning how to release a weak virus to remove the one lasting threat to their one world order...

This is totally anecdotal, but I have several friends who are as conservative as anyone here at FreeRepublic and are recently laid off, and extremely angry Trump has allowed this to progress the way it has.
I’m not laid off, but I’m extremely annoyed with him for that same reason. I will vote for him of course, but this is insane what is going on here. I blame him primarily for allowing Fauci and Birx to hijack this entire fiasco and drive the narrative. And Pence has been a disaster running this (I know I am in the minority there). Now the Governors continue to inflate death counts to get federal money while continuing to weaken the economy and Trump. They are bound and determined to get to 100K deaths.
My wifes company has finally started lay offs, she was not in the first round, but where do you go to find a job in your early 60’s? I am really beginning to believe Trump has dropped the ball in this mess.

Extremely angry at Trump for the fake immigration ban, allowing the 1,000,000 Indian H1Bs and other non-medical-field related foreigner guest workers to stay in this country while 36 million Americans are unemployed.
Was this a quid-pro-quo situation? Indian HCQ medicine in exchange for allowing these H1B scabs to remain in this country?
