Boneless chicken is first to go scarce as coronavirus hits U.S. meat supply

Goodbye, boneless chicken.

Food retailers across North America are swapping boneless chicken legs for less popular thighs and drumsticks as a wave of shutdowns at meatpacking plants has reduced supplies of sought-after cuts.

Covid-19 infections among workers at some of the largest meat processing plants in the U.S. and Canada have reduced slaughter capacity, and in some cases the types of cuts available. Outbreaks have shut down almost a third of U.S. pork capacity and the growing wave of disruptions has spurred plans by President Donald Trump to order meat-processing plants to remain open. In Canada, Cargill Inc. has idled its beef plant in High River, Alberta, which accounts for about 40% of Canada’s processing capacity while JBS SA’s beef plant in Brooks, Alberta, is running at about half capacity.

Quebec-based Goodfood Market Corp., which delivers meals on a subscription basis, said it will be substituting its regular boneless chicken for bone-in thighs, legs and drumsticks as the poultry industry shifts away from de-boning to ramp up production.

“Poultry suppliers are still facing labor shortages and many of them are operating with less than 50% of their regular workforce,” Goodfood Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Ferrari wrote in an email to customers. “To ensure the essential supply of chicken for Canadians across the country, the poultry industry as a whole is shifting away from de-boning chicken legs to increase their production capacity.”

****it will be substituting its regular boneless chicken for bone-in thighs, legs and drumsticks****

Pretty sad to think that the two ladies who collaborated on this have obviously never cooked for themselves. Legs ARE drumsticks.

>>>>There was 80,000 2018-2019 flu season. They don’t mention that.

They didn't mention it because that's not correct. Last year it was 34,157

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/past-seasons.html

If you are going to spout stats - at least spout them correctly.

And for the record - they are all "estimates." People making light of 60K deaths here use 80K deaths as if it is a "fact" - and it's not - it's a range - and 80K was the middle "guess" for 2017 - 2018.

Funny - you DIDN'T MENTION THAT. Seems stats and facts are convenient for you too.

Indeed....boneless thighs as well but I’ve been in the meat business for 40+ years and have yet to run into a “boneless leg”

Not a lot, but I have a recollection of seeing them.

Never seen boneless drumsticks.

I’ve seen “boneless wings”, but I think those were actually, in effect, chicken nuggets.

Here is the thing: I never knew anyone like this until about the past ten years, but know at least 2 people (who don’t seem to be uncommon this way), who refuse to eat chicken “on the bone”. ??

I prefer some baked or grilled thighs, myself, and wonder how did some people grow up, never eating chicken parts with bones in them?

Is it a generational thing? Maybe they got undercooked chicken (bloody near the bones) as kids?

Anyone one calling this on day one was an idiot.
Sorry, we had limited knowledge of this virus, didn’t know the consequences, what it targets, what harm it does.

If you think this was just the flu bro on day one, sorry I have to say you are a careless idiot who would have gotten 100s of millions sick and many more dead people. How do you think the economy would survive through that? Do you honestly think businesses would stay open and let their employees drop dead? Do you think anyone one would want to leave their house?

I think President Trump did the best decision of a really bad situation, was it perfect, heck no, but I think this was the best solution considering the unknowns at the time.

Just had a text from a friend, panic buying at grocery store, limit of 1 package of meat, people screaming at each other over masks.

“Sorry, we had limited knowledge of this virus, didn’t know the consequences, what it targets, what harm it does.”

That pathetic statement applies to almost anything. If that is the standard you believe in then enjoy your permanent protection state. So we should act first and think later. What we knew Day 1 has not changed. The virus is acting just as Fauci predicted based on his knowledge at the time.

“I have to say you are a careless idiot who would have gotten 100s of millions sick and many more dead people.” I would have gotten no one sick, the virus would have done the sickening, News flash: 100’s of millions will get sick and far more people are going to die. You do understand that the plan is to SLOW the spread NOT STOP the spread. The spread will continue and people will continue get sick and some will die. By not maxing the health care systems we may save some lives. That is all.

“Do you honestly think businesses would stay open and let their employees drop dead?” Take a deep breathe and look around you, Businesses have stayed open and there has yet to be one single employee drop dead on the job from Corona.

“Do you think anyone one would want to leave their house?” Again, take another deep breathe and observe that there are many people leaving their houses everyday and a majority of people want the lockdowns to end.

What we know is this. You should be free to isolate yourself, give in to your fears based on everything you do not know, and know that no one will force you to be exposed to this virus. But anyone else should be free to decide if they wish to go about their life free from tyranny.

The virus is still out there waiting for you. What will you do? What will you do when the next scary sounding unknown virus comes along? Who is Climate change targeting? Do we understand it well enough to know that it will kill billions?

US population 330,000,000
Annual deaths 2,900,000

It is ok to die from anything but Corona.

Ummmm, legs and drumsticks are the same piece of Chicken... I suspect the person writing this doesn't know a lot about butchering a chicken...

This sounds like a violation of the ‘cruel and unusual punishment’ clause of the Constitution to force the Snowflakes to cook a chicken with a bone in it.
