Unemployment benefits boosted by $600 as part of Congress stimulus package
Average weekly payment up to $978 - increased from almost $378 last year
Half of full-time workers earned $957 or less a week in the first quarter of 2020
Around half of all workers in the US could earn more in unemployment benefits than in their jobs before the coronavirus decimated the economy, official figures have revealed....This increase added to state benefits should give an average weekly payment of $978. On average almost $378 was paid in unemployment benefit to each claimant last year, according to the Labor Department.
On average half of full-time workers earned $957 a week or less in the first quarter of this year - around $20 a week more [less? DM is never good at math] than the combined unemployment benefits, the figures show....Some workers appear to be better off being laid off in order to receive the extra benefit, instead of staying on the payroll for a job with potential reduced hours.
According to calculations by the New York Times, workers in more than half of states will receive, on average, more in unemployment benefits than they did from their normal salaries.

I don’t think so. Just have to see what happens after the 600.00 goes away at the end of July.
Well the business will just have to hire someone else. The 600.00 I think goes until July.
*****************************************
Yep, through July 31st. If a laid off employee refuses to return to work, the employer should simply hire someone else in their place. There will be an initial training cost but for the long term the employer will have an employee with an actual work ethic.
“Why? We dont need it.”
I agree! I’m retired military. My wife and I live off my retirement pay. We saved money. She worked and our house is paid for. Our expenses are low by design.
My income hasn’t gone down a penny. My SAVINGS are down, now, for a while. That is a risk we accept because our lifestyle means my retirement pay suffices.
We could start drawing Social Security but won’t for a few more years. Still don’t truly expect to see it...figure the Dems will introduce a bill to say anyone with military retirement doesn’t “need” social security. But our lifestyle and spending is based on never seeing any, so...we’d still do fine.
Bottom line? We didn’t do anything or suffer anything justifying our getting $2400. My wife has family overseas who are being hard hit and sent her $1200 to her family. My daughter in the military, being pretty idealistic, gave hers to charity. Mine went to our other kids. But...the US government is already operating at a deficit! WHY?!
Guilty as charged.... theres chance my job will never come back.... job prospects at age 65 not good
Back in the day, you use to have to prove you submitted three applications per week in order to maintain unemployment benfits. Also, when the company that laid you off, offered you your job back, you had two choices: 1) go back to work and stop receiving UE benefits, or 2) stay unemployed and receive NO UE benefits.
If a company offers an unemployed person their job back, and they don't go back to work, the UE benefits should stop IMMEDIATELY. Case closed. No appeals.
Absurdity!
If you are a part time worker only, you are making out like a bandit. If you had a second, part time job that was stopped, but still have your full time job, you are struggling.
When called back to work and they decline, all benefits should cease.
Then all benefits should stop.
bkmk
I have a friend who told me his wife is in this situation. Fortunately, she would rather work than be a moocher...she is a South American LEGAL immigrant, btw.
My friend is irritated the law allows people not to work and get MORE $ for doing so. This law must be repealed.
ASAP.
Think it is bad now?
Nancy Pelosi and many of her minions want to make it permanent, whether you work or not.
The road to hell...
The best thing about the stimulus was that they gave it to everyone not requiring a lot of paperwork that would have made a lot of government workers busy while soaking up a large portion of the money.
No PUA payments thus far in Oklahoma....
As state reopens, Oklahoma workforce leaders discuss asking for end to federal unemployment payments
This is the biggest reason, now the curves are in decline, to open up lots of businesses. If they’re getting called back to a prior job and refuse to their unemployment status should be revoked.
These people WILL be the death of our economy, they’ll ruin it for everyone, including themselves eventually. smh.
Its not about benefits its about getting as many new dollars as possible issued at zero interest into circulation. Trump has a plan. Trust the plan.
Read my post #37.
My wife’s hours were dropped to 25 hours per week and is now getting unemployment (full), making much more than when she was at 40 hours.
I think ours in Virginia will only begin maybe in 2 weeks or so...
