HALF of Americans can make more in unemployment benefits than they would at work under stimulus package

Unemployment benefits boosted by $600 as part of Congress stimulus package

Average weekly payment up to $978 - increased from almost $378 last year

Half of full-time workers earned $957 or less a week in the first quarter of 2020

Around half of all workers in the US could earn more in unemployment benefits than in their jobs before the coronavirus decimated the economy, official figures have revealed....This increase added to state benefits should give an average weekly payment of $978. On average almost $378 was paid in unemployment benefit to each claimant last year, according to the Labor Department.

On average half of full-time workers earned $957 a week or less in the first quarter of this year - around $20 a week more [less? DM is never good at math] than the combined unemployment benefits, the figures show....Some workers appear to be better off being laid off in order to receive the extra benefit, instead of staying on the payroll for a job with potential reduced hours.

According to calculations by the New York Times, workers in more than half of states will receive, on average, more in unemployment benefits than they did from their normal salaries.

That weekly rate works out to $4190/month, which is the equivalent of over 50K/year. Don't expect a lot of these folks to be eager to get back to work - until the benefits stop!

Which is why I say no more $ help from DC. Time to get moving. Let them live on unemployment alone, others will fill their positions, as many probably others will have no job to go back to.

This article is correct, the benefits should have been provided for a shorter time period and should expire as we move to open the economy.

Free money from DC, what could go wrong. One should NOT be getting benefits when their job is offered back. It is that simple.

The leftist meme hitting social media this morning:

“Re-opening is about shifting the financial burdens of pandemic from the states to individuals, and this burden will fall disproportionately on workers who can’t collect unemployment once their employers reopen.”

We have gone to flattening the curve to keep the money coming.

Well the business will just have to hire someone else. The 600.00 I think goes until July.

Lindsay Graham noticed this, ah, flaw in the proposal, and tried to get it cleaned up. I wonder what became of his effort.

This guarantees the unemployment will remain high in November. Who does that benefit?

Lindsay Graham noticed this, ah, flaw in the proposal

He put it up for a vote to rescind the day after the "flaw" was discovered, and the Dems held sway - the Dems are thrilled to see this perverse incentive mangle America's economy while the Presidency is up for grabs.

“Well the business will just have to hire someone else.”

That’s a childish view of the world thinking there is always just somebody else. Try thinking those somebody elses are also ditching their employers.

If immigration is kept low, then Americans will get a raise as the free market reacts to government interference. Same reason we have employer based health care, so it should work for a little while anyway.

These funds were thrown out there without a lot of forethought. The same thing goes for the stimulus checks. My wife and I just got $2400 from the feds. Why? We don’t need it. We had a combined income last year of just over $100,000. We live in a rural area, and that income easily puts us in the top 5% around here. Our house is paid for, and we have zero debt. I’m retired with a guaranteed state pension, and my wife has a good solid job. We have more than half-a-million in retirement savings, with most of it in banks, not in the stock market. Why is a stimulus check sent to people like us? We plan to give the money to charity or to some friends who might need help.

That is if you can actually collect them. Here in NJ, good luck. The unemployment office is so overrun that nobody is getting unemployment.
