Newport beach rejects measure to close beaches after weekend heat wave prompts crowds to flock to coast...

The Newport Beach City Council rejected a proposed ordinance Tuesday, to close the city’s beaches for the next three weeks, after crowds of people flocked to the shoreline during last weekend’s heat wave.

After a lengthy debate in a remote meeting, five council members voted against the measure, with two in favor of it. More efforts to mitigate traffic will be instituted, as well as more officers and lifeguards on duty to ensure social distancing is followed, officials said.

“Of course we want people to be responsible and practice social distancing, and be good neighbors, but we see other beaches opening up around the state and we think now is not the time to close down beaches,” Councilmember Kevin Muldoon said during the meeting.

An estimated 40,000 people packed Newport Beach on Friday and Saturday, making national headlines and prompting a frustrated response from California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Sorry, Governor Gavin...

Newport Beach City Council is not as unreasonable as you are...

I just hope that Newport Beach City Council would open all the parking lots...Give up...People have to get out of their houses once in a while...They will park in residential areas if they have to...

For the record, I have never visited Newport Beach...Too far for me...I am willing to go as far as Huntington Beach...

It’s the same on the Texas Gulf Coast. The weather is warm and the kids are all out of school so closing the beaches is just not gonna happen.

Gavin is a flaming, clueless jerk with no common sense. Look at him... he’s a silver spoon dandy who has never seen a lick of work in his entire lifetime. He nothing more than Nancy’s pathetic puppet.

I have never been to Huntington Beach but I have friends who live there. I hope it opens up, too. I thought I saw something about a Huntington Beach protest against the lockdown.

Huntington Beach is already open. Big crowds there last weekend, too. Looked at the beach cams several times, and looked like everyone was spread out. The reason Newsom is complaining is this puts pressure on him to open up Malibu, Santa Monica, etc.

However, I will admit that I was willing to give a “C” grade for Governor Gavin at the beginning of the shutdown...Now, he gets an “F” grade from me...

Yesterday I rode by the public beach at Müggelsee and saw it was closed. Then riding a trail at Seddinsee I found a tiny beach with nice sand in the water and went swimming. You can that... find a place through a forest.

The only way these tyrants are going to be stopped is if people simply do not listen to them.

The only power they have is what we give them. There are enough of us and if we don’t listen, they have no power.

You graded Newsom a “C” grade. The jerk is a flaming Marxist determined to confiscate (taxes) as much as possible from the working class and give it to illegal aliens. Over regulate business to the point that thousands leave the state every year. Revenues go down so he raises taxes to cover the short fall.

The Brown/Pelosi/Newsom family is a despotic snake pit, determined to destroy the state.

I’ve only lived here a few years and have discovered that for the most part most Californians have no clue what the hell is going on around them.

From the little information we really have about the coronavirus, as long as people keep their distance and keep contact down, the beach seems like one of the best possible places for them.

I gave him a “C” at the start of shutdown...Because he did not complain too much about “lack of federal response”...
I do agree with your other points about Governor Gavin...

I get your sentiment but what I think you mean is when people refuse to obey them.

Exactly the lesson I hope the people learn from this quarantine.

Lifeguards?

How do they plan on saving someone drowning if they have to keep at least 6 feet away?

Laguna Beach to reopen city beaches for a couple of hours weekday mornings

By Erika I. Ritchie | eritchie@scng.com | Orange County Register
PUBLISHED: April 28, 2020 at 8:46 p.m.

City beaches in Laguna Beach will open for weekday mornings starting May 4; trailheads leading to open spaces will also be accessible.

The decision to try opening the sands with restrictions was made during a special meeting of the City Council on Tuesday, April 28, in which dozens of residents pushed to use city beaches for their own recreation and enjoyment and as a way to reduce the impacts to South Laguna beaches that experienced “Coachella-like” conditions as warmer weather settled in last weekend.

The county controls the city’s southern beaches and has kept them open, while the city blocked access to the stretches it oversees for several weeks in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Laguna Beach was the first city in Orange County to close its beaches in an emergency order on March 23.
