Gov. Cuomo doubled down Sunday on the states controversial directive ordering nursing homes to admit COVID-19 patients.
The governor who himself has described nursing homes as a feeding frenzy for the deadly coronavirus said that the facilities cant challenge a state regulation forcing them to admit patients with the contagion.
But he insisted that nursing homes could transfer those ill with the virus to another facility if the centers lacked such things as quarantine space, proper protective equipment and staff.
Asked by a reporter at his daily briefing Sunday if there was anything contradictory about his statements, the governor replied, No.

At least 3,500 nursing-home residents in the state have died from the coronavirus to date, including 2,000 in New York City, part of more than 16,000 overall.

Not only do they get to keep residents locked up but they also free up lots of beds in Nursing Homes
I just posted it here.
This guy doesn’t get the First Rule of Holes.
Is there some monetary incentive for nursing homes to refer patients to hospitals than transfer them to other nursing homes? I don’t know enough about the money issues to figure out why they would want to hang on to sick patients if what Cuomo says is true. Maybe in the first case (referral to a hospital) the patient comes back to them where as in the other case (transfer) they lose the patient all together. Either way, this is a dumb time to play whose schlong is bigger between the governor and the nursing home beauraucracy. It is sad that people have to die because of that.
It’s a bogus choice. Hospitals could have kept them. Fedzilla changed the regs to allow it if the facility couldn’t handle the WuFlu patient/s.
I’m thinking this is about Medicaid.
Patients on Medicaid/dual-eligibles cost the state less at a nursing home than in a hospital.
Skilled nursing facilities probably much less difference.
But cost was likely a big factor.
Also, if beds were available, why was the stare sending WuFlu patients Upstate? To share the wealth with certain favored facilities?
Yeah, place them in nursing homes where the staff is under-staffed, under-trained and lack the PPE equipment.
This will result in elevating the statistical numbers of infections, and create a rotation of vacant beds due to increased infections.
Also, there is a pending indemnification proposal by the nursing home industry which would absolve them from liability litigation, or responsibility.
If nursing homes are such a good idea to house covid-19 infections,
why is it that most infections in the State have already occurred in the nursing homes ?
The only thing missing are the garbage trucks loading up to go to a processing factory to produce "Soylent Green" (1973).
Maybe the Governor is using the movie as a training manual ? (/s).

This guy is a hole
Continue to watch the NY infection and death rate rise, dominate the national statistics and try to drive the crisis response for the entire nation
Name just one nursing home that can effectively isolate and quarantine
... 🦗🦗 ...
No nursing home except those for the rich and famous have anything approaching adequate staffing ratios, much less ICU level trained Nurses with sufficient administrative supports, negative pressure environments, and appropriate personal protective materials
Putting known infected cases into this environment was worse than if they had just parked them outside in the rain, waiting for the next Soylant Green pickup
... Im thinking this is about Medicaid.
45-65% of nursing home care is paid for with Medicaid
You are probably right (about cost being the issue). But it is a bad time to play this game. Given we are already up to our necks in losses, why not pay the additional money and keep the recovering patients in hospitals till they can’t spread it (an additional 2 weeks)? Especially when hosptials are emptying out. Maybe there are medicaid rules that prevent this — or it could be Cuomo trying to save money as the state is broke. The only people who lose in this battle are the patients.
This seems like it can ONLY be to increase the number of deaths and to infect additional elderly patients.
Otherwise, he would be sending new cases to the ship or the temporary hospitals, etc.
He thinks the path to more of our tax dollars is in killing more of his constituents.
This is what I THINK is going on with the nursing homes: the great majority of the residents are Medicaid. I would say 99 percent are Medicaid. This is because nursing homes are so expensive that the average citizen cannot afford the charge. Therefore they have to apply for MediCAID. Medicaid has a lot of regulations one of which is probably - “if you send a resident to the hospital, you have to take them back when/if they are discharged”. (I think this was a regulation yrs ago. Not sure now. It makes sense because NH have so few vacancies, the state wants to make sure the resident have a place to return to when discharged from hospital)
Cuomo should have called the president immediately when he realized the problem. Cuomo should never have allowed a virus resident return to NH to infect other residents or staff. Man has no common sense
The Butcher of Albany
States are facing dire prospects in funding, and Medicare/Medicaid are significant chunks of the states’ budgets.
Putting elderly COVID-19 patients in nursing homes is a solution to that problem. Infect the aged and infirm, then they die and ... Voila! Lower Medicare/Medicaid spending.
So we see that Sarah Palin was wrong about “death panels”. In fact, the governor has issued a death decree.
Depending on the facility, it can be much higher than that.
The governor had help. He did this with the assistance of the state legislature, unless the state legislators are going to try to plead ignorance about what was contained in the recent budget.
How does he not see the contradiction??????
That guy has to go.
