Japan’s Coronavirus Cases Fall Sharply Without Compulsory Measures
The Wall Street Journal ^ | April 27, 2020 | Alastair Gale

Tokyo reported its lowest daily level of new coronavirus cases in more than three weeks, a fresh sign that Japan may be succeeding in suppressing the outbreak without compulsory social distancing and with limited testing. Unlike many Western countries, Japan hasn’t imposed a lockdown backed with fines or other penalties. Instead, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has asked people to reduce their contact with others by 80% and encouraged businesses to reduce hours of operation or close. Restaurants may open but are asked to close by 8 p.m. Japan has also shunned widespread testing for the virus, instead focusing on targeting clusters of infection when they appear in an effort to snuff out any further spread.

On Monday, Tokyo reported 39 new cases of infection in the capital, the lowest total since March 30. New cases are often lower on Mondays because they reflect test results from Sunday, when many hospitals are closed, but the latest figure was less than half that of every other Monday in April.

The downtrend in new cases is also reflected in national data. Across Japan, the rate of increase of coronavirus infections fell to 1.5% on Sunday from 12% a day after Mr. Abe asked people in major cities to reduce activity under a state of emergency on April 7. Japan has reported 13,385 infections and 351 deaths, a death toll lower than in many U.S. states. Japan appeared at risk of an exponential surge in infections in late March and early April as many people went about their business as normal, including joining parties held in parks over a three-day weekend to view cherry blossoms. But following Mr. Abe’s declaration of a state of emergency and an expansion to the whole country on April 16, pedestrian numbers have fallen sharply in city centers...

“Yes, the US sacrificed itself on the altar of an artificially created PC panic.”

It’s worse than that. We have become a society that is so self centered that the collective we is willing to accept almost anything in the name of keeping the individual safe.

I watch people on social media turn in their neighbors as if it were some sort of noble duty.

The Japanese people submissively obey government recommendations without ramped up coercion.

Unlike the yahoos in this country that would rather go to prison than wear a face mask.

That is the difference.

Then again, the Japanese will also submissely follow Tojo into nuclear armageddon.

They are just encouraging people to stay home without closing businesses. No compulsion in most of the US either.

Or pay taxes that they didn't vote for.

Perhaps “obsessive cleanliness after disposal of used food”.

Yahoo here. As opposed to the idiots who reflexively wear a mask even though they said you don’t need it, then you do? And the science is still unclear.

It’s a different culture. Their government did not need to impose strict controls when a majority of the people complied with the infection control guidelines.

There are many factors like genetic makeup, virus mutations etc that may account for different results in different places. The virus is not a one trick pony and perhaps we should hesitate a bit before condemning various lockdowns.

Sweden is below our total case rate, has peaked their daily case rate (50-60 cases/day/MM) at about 75% of our per-capita rate (maybe 75/day/MM) over the same period of time that we have, and has a higher death rate per capita (225 vs 171/MM) but still well within the same order of magnitude. All with a more conservative method of counting cases.

With all due respect to the fact that Japan did not lock down most of its economy, we are talking about a society, Japan, that is socially very different than the U.S., and it starts very young.

Being ‘asked’ to do something by government in Japan means something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than a ‘request’ from our government.
