On Friday, he withdrew a previous plea of not guilty by reason of insanity and prosecutors said they wouldn’t seek the death penalty. Muhammad is expected to be sentenced next month to life in prison without possibility of parole.

I think most prosecutors could get a guilty plea instead of going to trial in exchange for removing the death penalty, especially in an easy case like this.
Oddly enough, I dont recall hearing about this on the news.

Soon to be followed by appeal after appeal - spin the wheel and pick a reason, “I was railroaded, they forced me to plead guilty, my attorney did a terrible job” or, better yet, released because of a pandemic.
