1. He did not mean to inject Lysol.

2. The media would attempt to crucify him with the comment.

Agreed. Trump could have instead walked on water that day and people who look at the world in that very emotional and image and soundbite based and petty manner probably would have ignored that and found something else to pick out and frame it in that same manner sooner or later.

He should never have put out a statement that he was being sarcastic. His gut instinct was fine there, but it just wasn't the right place for brainstorming.

Not only does creating a false narrative violate the only true purpose of the free press, viz. truthfully informing the people, but it dangerously misinforms the people.

Whether this is done because of honest mistake, carelessness, stupidity, or malice, honest people would cease doing it and correct their mistakes as quickly and thoroughly as possible.
