Courage? It’s In Short Supply

Will our elected officials ever have the courage to talk honestly about COVID-19? That is the question asked by a reader who despairs over the countless millions of lives being devastated by governments’ shutdown orders:

Here’s one of the crazier features of “expert guidance” as governors try to lay out criteria for reopening their states. With the exception of the Deep South governors (who are taking variable stances), it seems that most governors want to see declining counts of positive cases in the state.

But everywhere we have tested a whole population (a ship at sea, all the women coming in for delivery in NYC, everyone in a Boston homeless shelter), the finding is that a majority (often a large majority) of infected people are asymptomatic. Aren’t “experts” aware of this characteristic of the disease? It has been widely reported for weeks!

What this means is that confirmed cases is hugely problematic as an indicator – it just can’t tell us much about how or where the disease is spreading. If we do more tests, we’ll find more positive cases. We started out only testing the most severe cases and ones with ties to Chinese travel. Now tests are more plentiful, so more people with mild symptoms are being identified as positive. But even if we are picking up modestly more of the symptomatic cases, we’re still missing the asymptomatic cases. Given how many people have mild or no symptoms, that’s most of the cases!

Case counts just don’t provide meaningful epidemiological information under these conditions. Why can’t experts seem to see this?

I’ll say it it’s just a somewhat tough case of the flu

it’s nothing like SARS. OR MERS

The fact that 90-95% of people who get it done even know they have it says I need to know right there

This whole shut down has been BS and I believe Trump knows it now

In my area, there were a lot more people out at the local creek today.

Courage would be opening restaurant you own to the public for people to come in. I don’t know if I would I don’t want to go to jail.

I would go in there to eat though. If enough of us went into a place it would be quite a scene, dozens of cops coming to arrest us.

But this can’t go on much longer.

Our local state park nearly ran out of parking spaces. The main lot was full and the other two were around 75%. People were out walking, running, playing frisbee, exercising dogs, biking, and meeting friends for picnics. Groups were small, but they didn’t all look like family groups. Traffic has been increasing, and few people are adhering to mask edicts, except when food shopping. We’ve been under restrictions for 6 weeks and the latest county update is mathematically garbled and shows no end in sight. It’s going to get interesting.

“local creek”

Many ‘closed’ signs torn down. The local gendarmes had put up actual ‘crime scene’ printed yellow tape on the openings in the fence. All but the playground and the tennis court tapes are down. Many more will happen, I hope.

Courage would have been staying open. Protect the vulnerable and elderly and remain open. Instead, government across the nation cowed and succumbed to “scary” instead of using common sense. It’s BS and too many supposed lovers of freedom become scaredy-cats themselves.
