Please. Egyptian Sinai flies are the worst. Same fly shooed away a dozen times and lands in the exact same place every time. Kill it, 10 takes his place.

WW2 North Africa, all the horrors of war in a desert, but some said the flies (feeding on corpses) were the worst of it.

Sounds like muskie fishing in the Boundary Waters.

Yup. I did the South Australian wave more than a few times. Worst is when a kamikaze fly dives down your throat.

We used to say you eat a pound a flies a year at Woomera!

Melbourne has a horrible fly problem. I thought I was Tijuana. None of the locals seemed too bothered by it. Total 3rd world situation.

I saw some old films about how the English handled the fly problem by making traps for them. They buried millions of dead flies as they were so many.

Anyone got a print of the traps?

During my first trip to Australia (1979) I took the Indian Pacific from Sydney to a town called Broken Hill...which is very much in the Outback.

It was March (summer Down Under) and it was hot as hell.It was in Broken Hill that I learned what the Aussie salute is.The flies were everywhere and they attack any moisture spots...eyes,nose,ears,mouth.

Probably an infestation of Progressives nearby drawing the flies.

DDT doesn’t work. We used it on the farm after WWII. Thousands or more of flies was a way of life with livestock. DDT became available. We sprayed the cattle and the barn walls. Presto - no flies, it was heaven on earth. In a while a few flies showed up and gradually the population increased. We sprayed again and most disappeared. The cycle repeated and by the end of summer there was no effect from the spraying. We tried lindane and some other things, but flies soon became immune to them all.

I’ll take your word for it, but NJ shore green flies sound just like them.
