Will our elected officials ever have the courage to talk honestly about COVID-19? That is the question asked by a reader who despairs over the countless millions of lives being devastated by governments shutdown orders:
Heres one of the crazier features of expert guidance as governors try to lay out criteria for reopening their states. With the exception of the Deep South governors (who are taking variable stances), it seems that most governors want to see declining counts of positive cases in the state.
What this means is that confirmed cases is hugely problematic as an indicator it just cant tell us much about how or where the disease is spreading. If we do more tests, well find more positive cases.
Case counts just dont provide meaningful epidemiological information under these conditions. Why cant experts seem to see this?
If you read carefully, you can figure out that all the epidemiologistsas far as I knowsay that CIVOD-19 will continue to spread, over time, until enough of us have had it to confer herd immunity. The percentages I have seen range from a low of around 25% of the population to a high of 80%. This is true regardless of how long the shutdowns last. The curve no longer needs to be flattened, so the shutdowns no longer have a coherent purpose, but have taken on a life of their own.
Will the experts and elected officials ever have the courage to tell people the truth about the situation? No. And the less said about our hopelessly corrupt press, the better.

Will our elected officials ever have the courage to talk honestly about COVID-19? T
Will they just quit talking please.
Go back to work Now
Things seemed to be on track in S. AB for a re-opening. Unfortunately, last week the Cargill plant in High River was closed. 2000 employees and 400+ with the CCP-Coronavirus. Gonna be a LONG summer in AB!
Instead the CDC has ordered all deaths where the deceased has Corona be counted as Corona death.
Nation wide order.
Heart Attack, later testing positive for corona? Listed as Corona death.
Car accident, later testing positive for corona? Listed as Corona death.
I have said several times on several threads that we cannot take a one size fits all approach to this problem.
The insurance industry as tables of risks based on your age, weight, and overall health to include underlying conditions.
We have to do the same thing.
A significant portion of our work force has almost zero risks from this virus and we know much more now about treating it than we did even two weeks ago in those cases.
There is no justification to keep this group isolated. None.
There will be plenty of hindsight and second-guessing of this due to the draconian approach, but I think in the end this will be the one that sticks. Every day we are finding out more information that it is far more widespread than anyone expected and that your chance of a negative outcome is very low unless you are an older person with underlying health conditions.
This is real data and it must be factored into the decision making process. The one size fits all models used by the President’s health advisors and championed by the media have been wrong. Very wrong.
We heard from the same people advising the President and influencing his decision making in the middle of the fog of war. However, there is no longer any fog about what I wrote above.
We will need to isolate the elderly and vulnerable for many more months in my opinion, but there is no longer justification for those in reasonably good health without underlying health conditions to remain isolated.
I am praying that President Trump steps outside of the task force bubble long enough to realize this. I would be willing to bet strongly that Navarro, Mnuchin, Kudlow, and others in the President’s inner-circle are telling him this daily.
This is real data.
My kids have no risk.
Most of my co-workers have very little risk.
My wife and I have much more risk than these groups, but still little chance of dying from this virus based on statistics. I am willing to chance it - some may not be.
My parents are high risks based on their age.
Our last remaining grandparent is extremely high risk from this virus. A statistical death sentence.
THIS is how we need to process the data and THIS is how we need to re-open the economy and get things moving again.
It is the only intelligent way if they are going to use a data-driven approach as they claim. Using the one size fits all NYC model is a guarantee that both our nation and potentially our President will fail. Those models have not worked and they are NOT categorizing the data as I did above.
P.S. - screw the media. I will demand the HCQ treatment when I get sick. I have read and heard enough anecdotal stuff to know that as soon as I experience any cold symptoms I am off to the doctor and I am on the HCQ, which the military provided me long ago with no side effects that I recall.
Yesterday, we saw the highest - by far - number of new (US) cases since the epidemic began. I don’t know if that’s just a function of testing, which has been ramping-up in the last few days, or that the disease isn’t fading as fast as the experts predicted. The problem is that I don’t know if the category of “new cases” means people who are hospitalized, who are showing symptoms whether hospitalized or not, or just testing positive.
I wonder how many of those 400+ with the CV are actually showing symptoms, and how many are sick enough to have been hospitalized. If we wait until no one tests positive for the CV, we may never get back to normal.
Courage...the proper non-vulgar virtue/word that you want to scream at people...especially men!
If I were governor, I would leave all the decisions up to the individuals and companies. Politicians (the nanny state) assumes no one has any common sense. Let the snowflakes cower in the corner where there is no UV.
That would be True-dope’s desire. He could kill the bug AND the economy in one fell swoop. The good news is it’s up to the Province’s Premier, Jason Kenney. I have more faith in Kenney than ‘Little Potato’ True-dope.
Actually, I believe that three have died, associated with Cargill plant. One was a Cargill employee in her 60s with underlying conditions. Her elderly hubby then passed away from it. In addition, another neat packers in AB had a death and has closed. We could be looking at meat shortages in AB.
Think about that. As a nation we have gone from "I regret I have but one life to give to my country", "Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead" and "Let's roll" to saying "be safe". Says a lot about the majorities state of mind and our future.
In a reality where "Who dares wins", what kind of future is there for a people with no courage?
More testing, more cases. Many of the tests are from backdated cases that were contracted days or weeks ago.
For example, 250 new cases discovered today may mean only 30 people in the last day or two, 150 over the previous 5 days, and 70 from the week before that.
Courage?
From the people who were so afraid of being called a “birther” that they refused to uphold the Constitution?
More cases, longer lockdown.
