According to the the report, U.S. government researchers had been conducting kitten cannibalism experiments spending taxpayer dollars to buy cats and other animals from Chinese wet markets and then feeding their tissue to kittens in the U.S.
The currently approved protocol for this project calls for up to 100 kittens to be bred each year at ARSs Animal Parasitic Disease Laboratory (APDL) in Beltsville, Maryland. At eight weeks old, the kittens are fed raw meat infected with the Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) parasite, and their feces is collected for up to 3 weeks so experimenters can harvest oocysts (eggs) for use in food safety experiments. These healthy kittens who briefly pass the parasites eggs and become immune within weeks are then killed and incinerated by USDA because they are no longer useful.

Keep your hopes up Beav, it just might happen.
Is anyone really surprised?
uh oh
A couple of years ago I was watching one of those animal specials. A mother lion needed to hunt and she had to leave her cub alone. While she was gone a snake swallowed her cub. When she got back she killed the snake and retrieved the cub. She ate the cub. The explanation given was that she did not want her cub to be a meal for predators so she denied them something that would help them survive.
I thought cats hated wetness
Lab rats, ok - fine. But kittens? Makes me sick and whoever the debased egghead is that thought of this “experiment” needs to beat until he’s nothing but a stain on the ground.
I actually would support PETA committing an act of terrorism against those people.
I think this is somewhat backwards from how it needs to be done. They need to feed the tainted meat to the researchers. After 100 days, test the researchers. Then kill them and incinerate them because they are worthless.
[It’s possible that food is food, and cats just shrug their shoulders and say, well better you than me and they dig in.

Incidentally, Treadwell is said to have been runner-up to Woody Harrelson in the auditions for the Cheers role. I assume Treadwell wouldn’t have become bear vittles if he had won that role. Talk about the road not taken.

* Hitler had to devise creative means to carry out executions such that morale wouldn’t be affected - it really was psychologically-difficult except for people with sociopathic tendencies, even if the victims were from groups viewed as outcasts/subhuman by the Germans.
Very sad story. Poor guy.
Operation paperclip and nazi experiments never really stopped.
One HAS to wonder if these Bozos have ANY sane oversight person approving/disapproving their “science?”
A cat?
No, a bat.
The G-men are NOT your friends.
Nor to any living thing.
Dr. Mengle lives.
It seems you can’t swing a dead cat in a wet market without hitting a U.S. government agent.
I am who would do that?
They don’t really give the why of this. I will bet the intentions are more honorable than you may figure.
My guess is that this is a good way to develop whatever is floating around in that market, without actually endangering humans.
The problem is, if that is the case, it didn’t do anything for us with COVID-19, but then because the story probably did not develop as the Chinese have indicated, it probably didn’t show up there first.
