Right now everyone is making fun of Trump's comments about disinfecting from the inside.
What goes unnoticed is that he actually may be right.
Just like chloroquine it is a very old med, and generally forgotten -- nonprofitable. Two differences with chloroquine are: (1) it is actually known to be safe (2) it is easy to understand why it works -- it actually kills viruses.
The med is Methenamine and it goes back to 1859. Some articles call it an antibiotic -- well, if so, it is the first one! More appropriate name would be anti-infective: it kills both bacteria and viruses.
Ironically it does exactly what Trump suggested yesterday: it applies a disinfectant *internally*. While drinking glorox would not do much good against virus, Methenamine delivers a powerful disinfectant in tiny dosages exactly to where you want it : respiratory and urinary tracts. (First destination is for the virus, Second is for the main usage TODAY). The disinfectant is actually formaldehyde. Methenamine is chemically formaldehyde, wrapped into a packaging to make is safe, it breaks down upon delivery. Formaldehyde kills viruses. (And it is not something you want to drink...except in this controlled fashion).
Today, methenamine is nonprescription medication for urinary tract bacterial infections. In 1920s it was perhaps the main anti-flu medication, both as treatment and as a preventative. (I have a funny leaflet from those days somewhere...claims 100% protection against flu... well, nothing is 100% protection, anything that works helps.).
Unlike most flu meds today, it is not a symptom reliever -- it is a virus killer. Not suggesting it or anything... but this is really one medication one should look at seriously. Fairly decent chances it works.... at least by diminishing the virus load.
(Yes, it is dirt cheap and non-prescription)

Too much blind worship is why Trump thinks he can come out with a foolish response like he did and get way with it.
There’s a long time til the election and he can still run away with it. As long as he avoids this type of stuff. So yes I think it’s important to strongly point this one out.

It kills BOTH. It kills regular flu virus (rhinovirus) -- this was known before WWII. So the potential is quite there.

DIFFERENT DRUGS for DIFFERENT uses with the exception of malaria. If you want to take the one with all the bad side effects for your malaria (chloroquine), instead of the other one (hydroxychloroquine) that doesn’t... go ahead.
Trump should avoid “riffing” about things off the top of his head at these briefings. The press will distort anything he says that isn’t crystal clear and based on written material.

Reminds me of when Sarah Palin said Paul Revere was warning the British during his famous ride in 1775. The Palinstinians at FR defended her just as many now defend Trump for his Biden-esque comment. It’s not the end of the word that he misspoke or was not clear in what he said, but I do wish he had not said it.
When Trump driving there are no lanes. And sending the media into panic is the purpose.
