Whitmer admin awarded campaign vendor lucrative data-gathering contract

The Democratic operative who was awarded a coronavirus-related contract by Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer's administration has deleted his website and removed identifying information from social media platforms.

Democratic consultant Mike Kolehouse scrubbed his online presence as state lawmakers push for oversight into Whitmer's handling of the pandemic, voicing concerns about hiring political operatives to run a public health project. GOP state representative Shane Hernandez sent Whitmer a letter Tuesday demanding answers on the contract. House speaker Lee Chatfield said the legislature would convene Friday to create an oversight committee examining the state's coronavirus response.

On Tuesday the Whitmer administration terminated a door-to-door pandemic tracing contract awarded to Great Lakes Community Engagement, an organization led by Kolehouse, just one day after its announcement. Within 24 hours of the cancellation, Kolehouse, who was set to take in nearly $200,000 in the deal, took down the website for his consulting firm, K2K strategies, as well as his Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn accounts. He did not return multiple requests for comment from the Washington Free Beacon and declined to answer questions about the contract, which would have tasked him with collecting sensitive health data, from the Washington Post and Crain's Detroit.

The oversight effort could spell trouble for Whitmer, who in March emerged as a potential running mate to presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden. She has faced intense criticism in recent weeks over a far-reaching stay-at-home order that hurts small businesses. The governor blamed the controversial contract on the state's health department and denied any involvement in the deal at a Wednesday press briefing. Hernandez said the public deserves a thorough explanation of how the state awarded a lucrative contract to Whitmer's campaign consultants.

“I’ve been following it in New York, I followed it when it moved to Boston and right when I saw the Grand Rapids (Facebook) page pop up, I liked it, then I started to get involved in the dialogue and wanted to bring my skill set to the table and help get this thing off the ground,” said Mike Kolehouse, 25, a local political organizer and 2010 political science graduate of Grand Valley State University.

Kolehouse currently works for a nonprofit and was previously the deputy campaign manager for Brandon Dillion, D-Grand Rapids. He has also worked with the Michigan Education Association’s local affiliate, Grand Rapids Education Association.

Kolehouse said the main points of this occupation is to address the ideas that the burdens of the state cannot be shifted on to the backs of the middle class, the poor and the elderly. He said that this year alone there has been an 86-percent tax cut for corporations, a $236 million tax on senior pensions and a 48-month lifetime limit on cash assistance, which he said directly affects the working poor.

“Everyone’s taxes have been raised so that we (government) can lower taxes for big businesses and corporations,” Kolehouse said. “That’s not fair; you shouldn’t take from the poor to give to rich.”

Shared sacrifice is only shared sacrifice if all parties involved are sharing, Kolehouse added.

So who do you think Gretchen Whitmer turned to?

You don't need to guess twice. On Monday, Michigan's Health Department announced a contract with a group called Great Lakes Community Engagement. That's a company that describes itself as specializing in quote, "outreach campaigns to engage citizens."

They're lying by omission. In fact, it's a leftwing activist group linked to a man named Mike Kolehouse, a former Occupy Wall Street leader who has become one of the state's top Democratic political operatives. The company had been paid huge sums to collect signatures in support of leftwing ballot initiatives. Now, Whitmer wants them to be paid and to collect information on her citizens' health.

Now to do that, this group was going to use software from EveryAction, that's a company that brags is "the leading technology provider to Democratic and progressive campaigns." Its software is used by Planned Parenthood, NextGen Climate, NERAL, the National Abortion Rights Action League, among other groups -- all of whom, by the way, Whitmer has served as governor. Keep in mind, she is selling lotto tickets, banning operations, allowing abortions.

This almost worked. Gretchen Whitmer is shoveling tax dollars to her political allies in the middle of a pandemic. But on Tuesday, Michigan press outlets asked her office, why are you hiring a far leftwing activist to lead a public health initiative in the middle of an emergency?

Meanwhile, the Michigan Legislature has scheduled a special session for Friday with the goal of creating an oversight committee to review Whitmer’s coronavirus orders and possibly strip her of some of her powers, the Detroit Free Press reported.
