What if Cultural Behavior Influences Coronavirus Susceptibility?

Upon hearing the Coronavirus Committee's expression of alarm regarding the disease's disastrous affect in New Orleans, Louisiana, I said to a friend, "I'd bet a lot of that statistic is black people, especially black women."

Several factors play into the statistics, but I would wager eating habits play a large part.

My family's roots are in Texas by way of Louisiana. Most of my ancestry can be traced to that state. An aunt explained that our ancestors were brought from Virginia to Louisiana. After emancipation and many decades later, they moved to Texas in search of employment.

I know the culture, and when one of the culprits in the list of underlying conditions was identified as diabetes, I was further convinced that obesity (a precursor to Type 2 diabetes) in so many black people is a major part of the problem. Fried and fatty foods are a staple of Southern cooking.

There is an interesting history of eating habits in the South. During earlier periods of the black experience in America, when economic conditions prohibited a typical black family from purchasing what we now know to be healthier foods, cheaper alternatives (especially to meat) were selected, primarily pork. In fact, there was a term for it. Expensive meats were considered "high on the hog." Those parts that were not prime (hog heads, feet, and intestines) were either discarded by meat-packers or sold at cheaper prices. And they were not as dietarily sound.

Even though I was born well past the time when my ancestors were compelled to live off such foods, they were embedded in the culture, so my mother prepared them in meals. As an adult, I had to wean myself away from those foods, because when prepared well, they are very appetizing. Barbecued ribs is a notable example.

How about blood pressure medicine affecting the stats. Lots of older people are on them.

I read an article that virus enters the blood stream similar to one type of blood pressure medicines.

Cannot remember which but Beta Blockers were not the one.

We need more of this sort of discussion.

Cultural differences exist. And that is OK. If a demographic group tends to be obese and tends to eat a particular diet, there may be health consequences. I have nothing to do with that. I resent the idea that “My demographic group is dealing with health consequences and that’s proof that we have a racist society.”

When people realized that COVID-19 was hitting blacks hard, some people cried “Racism!” That’s stupid.

“... I was further convinced that obesity (a precursor to Type 2 diabetes) in so many black people is a major part of the problem. Fried and fatty foods are a staple of Southern cooking.”

Does her culture include buying into government BS about fat causing diabetes? If she only ate fat she wouldn’t need to worry about diabetes.

The NHS in England apologized for the low fat diet advice nonsense. The US is still pushing it.

Maybe her culture could eat less slurries, sodas, cornbread, biscuits, gravy, pies, bread, hushpuppies,... Lord knows my culture won’t! I’m gonna need fries and shake with my hamburger for lunch.

I know well many of the members of a highly respected black family, nearby. The mother gave birth to 13 girls and 2 boys. 2 twins in that group. They are all great people, friendly, industrious, honest.

5 of them have helped care for a number of my sick relatives. They are almost family. My father and I went to their mother’s funeral. A large and amazingly varied gathering.

But the father cooked bar-b-que and there was a lot of pork used. With that number of children, it is not surprising that they made a lot of bar-b-qued pork ribs.

We often had one of them cook bar-b-qued ribs for my own family’s reunions. Uhhhh mmm Good.

I would bet smoking in all forms (cigarettes, cannabis, vaping) is a much higher risk factor than diabetes.

The mortality figures are higher for men in about the same proportion that men smoke at higher rates.

If the instances of people under 40 who are affected by the virus were analyzed, I will bet that a high proportion of those individuals smoke in some form.

That's what I've been thinking. Health authorities will probably drag their feet at reporting this.

Yes, diabetes is caused by excessive carbohydrates, not fat.

The most effective drug for early stage diabetes is metformin, which is basically a herbal supplement from a lily plant. The US FDA banned metformin for two decades after it was in common use in Europe. (My late mother suffered greatly from the horrid treatment of diabetes foisted on us by the US medical establishment.)

Many years ago I attended a meeting and heard a Black Cardiologist talk about Hypetensive Patients that were “difficult to control”. He, about halfway through the 90 minute talk told an interesting anecdote. He had published an article in a reputable Journal about how some blacks have Hypertension that is difficult to control on 4 or even 5 drugs. He said that after it had gone into publication a young Fellow had written a scathing critique of his work and blatantly accusing him of “Racism” (although the guys was black). He said a decade later he received a private letter from this guy apologizing for his previous behavior and admitted that after finishing his training he, too, had run into the same thing.

So, it would seem that maybe we aren’t “all alike on the inside”. I don’t see why that should be a problem as “left handers” aren’t like us inside either. But hearing there is an association between ACE receptors and noting that ARBs and ACE Inhibitors have been very helpful in controlling these very hard to control patients I can’t help but wonder.

I used to have Type 2 Diabetes. I was diagnosed in March of 2003 with it and was prescribed Metformin for it, which I took twice a day for 15 years. Now I don't have it anymore.

My son has it, but you should see what he eats. You'd think he eats for 3. It's no use to talk to him about it.

I understand. Believe me. If he can stick to a low carb diet, fat and protein, he will cure his type 2 diabetes. I did it. Then I fell off the wagon. But I mostly stick to it now and my sugar stays low. If not then I fast for 3 days.

“Too many white leaders tend to pander to racist blacks out of misplaced feelings of guilt over the historical plight of blacks in America.”

Nope. Not over “feelings of guilt.”

More or less for the same reason western culture has kow-towed to islam for over a millennium, why the US has dumped upwards of 20 TRILLION dollars down the “urban American” (as NPR refers to black/hispanic city dwellers) urban renewal, headstart, and all the rest hole since roughly the 1960s.

Placate the savages and they won’t get angry, riot, loot, burn, destroy.

White people can NOT, generally, have a sound, sane, rational discussion of race, victimhood, politics with MOST radicalized blacks (and working in a large eastern urban city I know the majority of my black patients are what one might call “radicalized” - victimhood and blame and hatred of white people are endemic) without risk of a discussion turning into a LOUD argument, with MUCH anger and implied if not actual violence.

“Dont’ make the black kids angry.” Where have I heard THAT before?

So we give in, give more, try to buy them off and it’s mostly worked for 60 years.

NOW try and tell them as a culture their ideals of “baby got back” and their little boys (and girls) looking like SPHERES at age one year is NOT healthy and will lead to a lifetime of medical issues? Bad white doctor, bad, bad, bad.

It’s a losing proposition, but I enjoyed the article.

Interestingly, we haven’t heard how this virus effects blacks, women, and children the most.

I think the issue is they are FAT, because they eat so much of everything. Fried and fatty foods happen to be very high in calories, and these people are eating a boatload of calories. This doesn’t claim that eating fat is problematic, but being fat is.
