Beneath the Sickened City (Homeless in NYC Subway System)
Reuters ^ | 04 22 2020 | MAURICE TAMMAN

Posted on 04/22/2020 11:47:54 AM PDT by yesthatjallen

A Reuters reporter and photographer spent several hours traveling under the city to talk to those with nowhere else to go. Afraid of the coronavirus in the shelters, many are sleeping on ghost trains and on platforms abandoned by almost everyone else during the lockdown.

The lights still scream for attention, but on this night Times Square has the feel of an abandoned Hollywood film set. Gone are the hordes of tourists shooting selfies with Elmo and Wonder Woman. Instead, a lone SUV glides by and a passenger’s phone glows as she records the scene from the safety of the car.

The unease grows on the descent into the Times Square subway station. Tutting commuters don’t barge past dawdling visitors. The full-time panhandlers have withdrawn. There is no music; the buskers are home, following orders to shelter in place.

On a normal night, in a normal time, you might not notice the gaunt man on the platform, his jeans held up by a cinched belt. But on this night, you notice that his face is uncovered.

“I am so hungry,” he says. “Do you got some change?”

As a pandemic races through New York, killing some 14,000 people in the city alone, all the frantic layers of everyday life are pulled away. The homeless – always there, but usually invisible – are now in sharp relief.

And people wonder why New York is the cornavirus capital of the USA.

I found a homeless guy who spent his days living between NYC subway cars. He was adept at riding the clasp that held two cars together for which no car-to-car connectivity for walking was in place.

And why are most of these people homeless? By their cutting school classes and depriving themselves of even a minimal ability to read and write, rendering themselves unemployable except for menial jobs which won't pay a NYC rent, by selling and using drugs instead of earning an honest living, by using alcohol to solve their problems, etc. I have no pity for people who are homeless because of these reasons, because they brought it on themselves. Who, when they were younger and at the fork of life choices, did they think would support them if not themselves?

For those who became homeless for reasons beyond their control, such as the loss of a job, enormous medical bills, etc., I do feel for their situation. Unfortunately, the libtards will not allow us to distinguish between these 2 categories of homelessness and so would demand we squander tax monies on the former group.

Eventually, he says his name is Sylver, with a “Y.” He’s in his 50s, an immigrant from Nigeria, a member of the Ibo tribe. He’s lived on the streets for 12 years.

Its nice to know we are so rich we can even make room for homeless people from 3rd world nations.

This is how I feel. I grew up poor, in an abusive situation. I mean ...really abusive and no one giving me any help. IN fact, they were working against me most of the time. I could have turned to a number of things — drugs, alcohol, behaving like a deliquent, etc. Instead I turned to education — worked my fingers to the bone. I”m now successful, married, and well off.

I made choices. Everyone CAN. It is inexcusable in this day and age, for ANYONE except those with severe mental illness, to be homeless at all. A lot of mental illness is treatable .... what’s not treatable is laziness and a desire to dabble in the darker side of life, and to make poor moral choices. What causes people to make these choices are cultural influences which exonerate partying, drugs, drinking, and shooting up.

I’d say 85% of the homeless are in that category.

I’ve met my share of people who have fallen on hard times, and most of them are on some kind of public assistance, stuff like welfare, food stamps, medicare or medicaid.

Those who I knew of on the streets were there are a matter of choice.

I recognize that mental illness is a whole different matter, but those are precious few and far between.

I guess there are no homeless people in the UK for this rag to report on.

#6. The Left, esp. the New York Elite Limousine Liberals, led by Communist psycho Mayor DeBlasio, need this underclass as an example of the failure of capitalism to solve society’s problems.

So rather than address these problems themselves, they set up tax-exempt, overpaid leftist commissions and institutes to “study” a problem that has been studied to death for a 100 years.

The Left “needs” the lumpenproletariat to do their dirty work, to wage labor wars, to block streets, disrupt conferences, talks, and outdoor meetings, etc.

Without many of them (i.e. the psychopaths of Antifa, etc), the Left would be held responsible for their failings. Rioting and intimidation draw attention away from real problems, and Communists like DeBlasio, Occasionally Sane Cortez, Gov. Cuomo, etc. are great at this “diversion” tactic.

Hope our side understands the importance of this article for it shows the human underside of the Left’s fat-assed bloated belly, its perverted laws, far-left social justice judges who are actually releasing the mentally ill/economically unprepared, and drug dealers back into social to wage a low-level war on it. This is an attempt by the Left o grab unprecedented local political emergency powers which they will never give up.

Another reason “never to give up your gun”.
