Cool.
I came 10 years after you.
The 31st MEU was the 31st MAU.
When you were aboard, was it still the Special Landing Force Alpha, or had it already been renamed to 31st MAU?
All of them are actually A type of aircraft carrier just not super sonic. They also have, i believe, helicopters and they have a task force of dupport ships with them like an aircraft Carrier group only smaller.
Someone told me that if you count them and all of our full sized Carrier groups together there’s like 27 aircraft Carrier type task forces.
I wish we had a real navy guy here to clarify but I’m not so sure we want to be clarifying the capabilities of anything we have anywhere at this point in time.
We seem to be on an actual war footing with China right now and it could go hot.
If we knew that it was actually a biological weapon in that was released on purpose this is the kind of pathway I would take to slowly crank up useful forces in the appropriate regions to physically retaliate and destroy the enemy who in this case may actually be Communist China who is at war with us.
This wouldn’t be the 1st time that 1 nation winning a trade war triggered International conflict.

If Vietnam or Phillippines want a US assault to protect their territory, I think we’d provide it.
Not sure either of them does though.

Right now, there is a potential to do aerial refueling from MV-22s in the form of a developed but unfunded system. It can be manufactured and deployed any time the Navy gives the green light to gain the capability and funds it.
T Roosevelt being off station and the substitution of the America may bring the matter to a head.
One of my best friends from grades 1-12 served on the Iwo Jima in the Pacific, while I was on the FDR (CVA-42) in the Med.
And squids with bad attitudes!
The USS America is an LHA-hull that’s optimized for aviation. They removed the well deck for this particular vessel (that’s the stern opening for floating out landing craft) and are using the increased space for weapons stores, fuel and aircraft hangar. The concept is an all-aviation vessel.
The air group is modular. The Navy/Marine Corps can go heavy on the F-35 component (minimal helicopters) and create something called a “Lightning Carrier” — in effect a light aircraft carrier from WW2 days, but with a deck full of stealth fighters. I suspect that they might be doing that here.
* The USS America is a dead end design. No more made in that class due to the design not having a well deck. *
They build 1 more without the well deck — USS Tripoli LHA-7. I don’t believe she’s in commission yet. LHA-8, USS Bouganville, will have a well-deck and she’s in an advanced state of construction.
If you’re talkin about lph-11 then you’re talkin about a ship that’s probably on the bottom of the ocean by now. Every lph I think is already sunk because they just got too old. The lha came afterwards and almost all of them have been sunk by now. The lhd which is what this ship is, it is the latest version of it in the last 40 years.
I was with the 31st Mau 40 years ago this week, and this weekend is the anniversary of the rescue attempt. My second time out with the 31st Mau was on board the USS belleau wood. My first time was on the USS Okinawa, lph 3
Yeah, but with the TR anchored off Guam you sorta knew that the USN was going to have to sortie USS America to fill the gap until another large deck carrier could complete her quals. The TR may be available in a few weeks, but the PLAN is getting frisky right now.
I’m sorry lph-11 was the New Orleans. It’s been 40 years sorry.
No doubt has a couple of deadly friends in close proximity but out of sight.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
That’s Imperative.
Ship destroying nap of the earth missiles fired from over the horizon would take out a ship like the USS America in a few minutes.
Hopefully we have pegged all enemy vessels in the area from Satellite surveillance and we have rapidly evolving attack plans already in place, updated every few minutes.
That’s the only way any war can be fought at all these days because of the lethality of ordnance which can be brought to bear.
(As I said, I'm showing my age here.)
US amphibious assault ships carry helicopters and V/STOL aircraft like the Osprey and F-35B and about 1,600 Marines. These vessels are intended to be able to land and support their Marines in rescue and combat operations. They are not a substitute for the far larger and more powerful US fleet aircraft carriers with their 90 or so fixed wing fighter and attack aircraft.
Thank God we have an American president now, and the best ever.
