One wears a mask so we don’t infect Other people. It prevents Our talking, coughing and sneezing from making microscopic droplet sprays in the air, just in case we are carriers and asymptomatic. (how would we know?)
Of course it would have no effect if we were healthy.

10 nurses here in southern California were suspended when they refused to treat patients who had the virus. They were only given standard medical masks and not the n95 ones. One other nurses had contracted the virus. They were reinstated after they got the only maks that works, the N95.
Because non medical grade masks do not protect the wearer (and medical grade actually have to be fitted to the wearer). And the wearer of a non medical grade mask might actually increase their risk of catching a coronavirus because coronaviruses survive on cloth significantly longer than on flesh and becomes an extra transfer spot that you put next to your face. The argument is wearing the mask protects others from the virus you might have, a more responsible action would be if you are sick don’t go out; if you are not coughing, sneezing, or projectile vomiting I am not in danger of catching anything from you and don’t need you to wear a mask.

Well I would not wear anything but an N95 or equivalent if I was concerned about my protection....Non-medical grade mask was not specified in the post...Better than nothing, but as was pointed out, they are more to protect others.
Medical (N95) masks are fitted; however, fitting is not like having a suit tailored or wedding dress fitted...How do I know this? My daughter works in a lab that serves a number of hospitals in a regional hospital group...She has had numerous masks and fittings in years past when the Chinese had not cornered the market on PPE,* and hospital personnel were educated on the importance of wearing N95 or better (look at older mask studies) and were provided with them...
She informed her supervisor that she would not be comfortable at work unless she was wearing an N95 (good thing as Feds kept changing the masks protocols)...And she is supplying her own due to shortages. She is doing grad work in infectious diseases/infection control...I will take her opinion over anyone’s...
Sorry, intelligent use of even surgical masks offer some protection...they are not stupid...And since anywhere from 10-25%+ of transmissions are from asymptomatic carriers where the person feels fine, I think people should be encouraged to wear at least a level 2 or 3 surgical mask.
Tho it may sound catchy, Masks are for more than bank robbers and Halloween.
BTW, WHO is corrupt, and CDC inept (test kits fiasco), and Surgeon General first implored Americans to stop buying masks and then showed us how to make them out of Shirts. Now medical personnel being told they should not be wearing cloth masks!?!? Sheesh! They all have changed their positions multiple times over just the past 3 months, so why would any thinking person trust what they are saying regarding masks?!?!?
*Major travesty in all this is the fact that Chinese were able to buy up large quantities of PPE in January which contributed to the shortages (lack of preparation by local, state and Feds added to problem)...Needs to stop and so does the Chinese manufacture of large quantities of our pharmaceuticals.

Ok, that says how many are asymptomatic, but where is your data that they are spreading the virus at the rate you claimed they are?
It was 2:30 a.m....I should have phrased more carefully...
However if 25% of cases are asymptomatic...Seems logical that it is a fairly high number... likely one of the reasons it is so contagious...
So do you have any data saying what it is?

Some of us have been saying this from the beginning of this silliness.

I find much of this virus issue is just assumption based and not fact based. People assume that because 25% of cases are asymptomatic, therefore 25% of transmissions are caused by asymptomatic people.
That assumption may be correct or may not. We can all agree now, that it is not based on any facts. It could very well be that asymptomatic people transmit at a higher or lower rate. We just don’t know.
I guess my point is, most people are making decisions on things that have no basis in fact. That is fine initially when there is no data to rely on. You go with theoretical models and gut instinct in absence of fact. We are however, starting to get that data now, but unfortunately people will hold to their original conclusions as we all can very well see by the fact that we are in lock-down when all the data coming in says we should not be.
For me, I question every assertion made, regardless who makes them so I can put together the clearest picture possible of what is going on for myself. I want to understand all of this while riding a sea of assumptions.
The reason I found this WHO statement interesting is that is was simply an admission that there is little to no evidence that masks change the equation for the better. In fact, there is an equal if not more amount that says it could do more harm than good.

I wore one for the first time yesterday to see a surgeon. Here’s what I figure:
The only masks that are effective are the HAZMAT / Medical Grade masks.
Only healthcare workers can get those masks.
Regular people wear masks because they have to.
Regular people’s masks can be home-made and cute, but aren’t effective.
Regular people’s masks are placebos.
I learned that breathing in your own breath for two hours is disgusting — and possibly harmful (I don’t know). Be sure to brush your teeth and gargle before wearing one. And, for Heaven’s sake, don’t eat garlic, etc., before putting on one.
One of the task force admirals told us unequivocally that wearing a mask prevented me from giving you the virus. Wearing a mask does not prevent you from catching the virus from me
