The WHO says on their site via a document:
"there is currently no evidence that wearing a mask (whether medical or other types) by healthy persons in the wider community setting, including universal community masking, can prevent them from infection with respiratory viruses, including COVID-19."
And that masks may cause:
• self-contamination that can occur by touching and reusing contaminated mask
• depending on type of mask used, potential breathing difficulties
• false sense of security, leading to potentially less adherence to other preventive measures such as physical distancing and hand hygiene
• diversion of mask supplies and consequent shortage of mask for health care workers
• diversion of resources from effective public health measures, such as hand hygiene
The best surgeons totally agree.
EXACTLY.
Idiots act idiotically. I’m no idiot. I have a few masks on rotation. I thoroughly sterilize them in an ozone box between uses. If I were using cloth masks, I’d simply sterilize them in the laundry, with added bleach.
Even if most people were idiots, and they acted idiotically; the rest of us would be safer if they wore masks. For instance, a mask is at least as good as a handkerchief for catching the spray from a cough. Idiots don’t cover their coughs.

Just because a particular person is too stupid to handle a mask does not mean every person is too stupid to wear a mask.
As has already been pointed out here, if masks are useless, then why do health care givers wear one.
You can cough if you swallow wrong and you can sneeze if you're allergic to something. Plus those droplets can settle on surfaces that others touch.
Why put other people at risk?

The data on spread via talking and breathing does not “come from Fauci”. There’s compelling and overwhelming evidence from multiple independent studies and analysis that conclusively proves that - and all of it has zero to do with Fauci.
In fact, one study came from JAPAN and had beyond compelling proof on video via in-depth scientific studies. So, there goes yet another of the popular conspiracy theories (that all US studies are BS and part of “the plot”, unless you’re convinced that Japan is “in on it” (the supposed conspiracy) also.

You have that completely backward. Wearing masks mainly protects other people. It’s a very small ask of anyone, with a modicum of social and personal responsibility. If you don’t wear a mask — don’t visit your elders, and don’t try to kiss babies.
Look at the numbers comparing mask-wearing countries, such as Korea (5 deaths/million people) to countries where people don’t wear masks (USA deaths/million = 146).

So-called mask? What the hell is the matter with you? It is what it is, and it is a mask.

Don’t move the goalposts. I didn’t say they could stop viruses. I said they can stop droplets, such as a person sprays when he coughs and sneezes. And that is just simply a fact.
A mask is not be perfect, down to the last virus, but it is a barrier that impairs the movement of aerosolized mucous that can carry viruses over many feet.
In practical use, it is better than nothing. Way better than nothing, and much more effective than 2% at preventing sick people from spraying viruses 30 feet in all directions.

Uh, think about it: if you are infected, wearing a mask will help prevent you from spreading the disease to others.
Wear a G-D mask.
You are going to get exposed to this virus sooner or later. No mask is going to prevent that. It might delay it temporarily, but YOU are going to get exposed. It’s going to get on your clothes or your shoes and you are going to drag it into your home and expose everyone there.
The sooner we get back to work, the quicker this nightmare is going to play out.
If you want to hide in your basement for the next two years, that’s your business. If you want to lock the rest of us up in our basements, well then that is OUR business.

THis is largely true. There is little evidence that a HEALTHY person, wearing some mask they made, or some cheap doctor’s office mask, or some ill-fitting mask they bought on e-bay, will actually protect them.
The reason to wear masks is so that, when you cough, breathe, or sneeze, if you are sick, your mask traps stuff, so it doesn’t get on other people.
I would note that CDC guidelines prohibit the use of masks with exhalers (vents that open up to breath out); Because the mask is meant to STOP YOUR breath from just escaping.
Duh-
But those that bought the masks, the cities that passed rules that mandated their use, and those that followed the rules, all “felt really good and in control.”
As a retired R.N., I KNOW that wearing a good mask will prevent the wearer from being exposed to air or droplet carried pathogens. Why would anyone refuse to wear a mask, knowing that the disease is present? Especially when their reason is they don’t want to be told what to do by the government.
Oh, I get it, we’re too stupid to wear them and it should be left to the professional.
Lets break it down. If a supermarket requires a mask to enter and any mask will do seriously how stupid is that!
Let’s drop the personal insults, K? I’m a traditional American and about as far from a “nazi” (seriously?) as you can get.
FWIW, I’m taking great pains to NOT get infected with the virus, because if I do as a higher risk person, there’s a good chance it would kill me.
If you want to not take precautions against it, that’s up to you.
In the meantime, you might want to read THIS - because it sounds like a lot of people posting on FR now. Not to ruin the punchline, but the guy in the article thought the virus was all “BS” and some “hoax”. Yeah, he caught it. He died.
