More deaths, no benefit from malaria drug in VA virus study By MARILYNN MARCHIONE

According to a study released on Tuesday, April 21, 2020, the malaria drug widely touted by President Donald Trump for treating the new coronavirus showed no benefit in an analysis of its use in U.S. veterans hospitals. There were more deaths among those given hydroxychloroquine versus standard care, researchers report. ( Hydroxychloroquine made no difference in the need for a breathing machine, either.
Researchers did not track side effects, but noted hints that hydroxychloroquine might have damaged other organs. The drug has long been known to have potentially serious side effects, including altering the heartbeat in a way that could lead to sudden death.
Earlier this month, scientists in Brazil stopped part of a hydroxychloroquine study after heart rhythm problems developed in one-quarter of people given the higher of two doses being tested.
Many doctors have been leery of the drug.
At the University of Wisconsin, Madison, “I think we’re all rather underwhelmed” at what’s been seen among the few patients there who’ve tried it, said Dr. Nasia Safdar, medical director of infection control and prevention.
Patients asked about it soon after Trump started promoting its use, “but now I think that people have realized we don’t know if it works or not” and needs more study, said Safdar, who had no role in the VA analysis.
The NIH and others have more rigorous tests underway.

Pff. They had this headline written the night PDJT called praised Hydroxychloroquine.
I wouldn’t believe AP if they told me water is wet.
Some places are holding it back for only the most critical patients.
It works best when given early, if you wait until they are on a ventilator, it’s too late.
A lot of treatment with this was/is at the very end for “compassionate care”.
The key is when it is being given and what regimen is being used.

If it didn’t work then Italy, Spain, Japan, India and the rest of the nations In the world wouldn’t have made it their first go to drug.
And you can’t tell me they’re using it because Trump touted it.

Now it’s NOT a cure. It doesn’t work with all people and, like cold medicine, it only alleviates symptoms until the body’s natural defenses can kick the virus out. It’s a TREATMENT. But it’s about the only treatment drug there is.

You just don’t know what they were studying, who they studied it on, when the drug was administered, to whom, how far in disease progression were they etc?
I’d imagine a VA hospital might have a large number of very sick people with comorbidities - but it’s just a guess. And if they waited until people were on ventilators to administer the drugs, then it was probably too late. I’m not saying the drug absolutely works, or works in all cases. But there is just too much data on the positive side to ignore.
AFAIK the study in Brazil involved very sick, infirm people.
It seems like some in the media are rooting for the drug to fail... for whatever reasons. Maybe because if the drug works, Trump will be hailed as a hero for promoting it. Meanwhile I think it is Novartis that is running a large Phase 3 clinical trial. That should provide more definitive data.
Sorry, but if it comes from the NYT, AP, the Guardian, or Reuters, I believe it as much as I believe an Obama statement.
There’s no way an off-patent medication like hydroxychloroquine could ever be considered “safe and effective”.
Since there are no massive profits to be made from it, hydroxychloroquine is not safe for the Pharmaceutical industry’s profit margin, and it is certainly not an effective way to come up with loads of cash for lobbyists and political contributions, not to mention Mainstream media advertising.

A Dr on the frontline said he sees minimal impact if not given in early stages. Right now people arent going to the hospital for fear of catching so the people that do come in are in late stages.
It makes sense. You need it in the beginning to stop the RNA from replicating.
After that you need Genentech’s drug to stop the cytokine storm..and that drug is hard to get.
this “study”...was posted on some web site...not peer reviwed by any doctors...sounds like political hit....
From what I have read, it depends on how soon in the progress of the illness it is taken. If it isn’t started at the earliest point, it isn’t as effective.
Cuomo in NYC denied it until someone was in such bad shape that they need to be hospitalized. Way too late and the “side effects then experienced” could possibly be attributed to the virus, not the drug.
There is a big political fight going on over money and control of the future, with us citizens unimportant and forgotten.
Zinc is what stops replication. Hydroxychloroquine is the tool that allows zinc into the infected cells.
Many people, especially elderly, are deficient in zinc.
If zinc sulfate is not given with Hydroxychloroquine then their studies are meaningless.
