You can always tell a Harvard man. But you can’t tell him much.

“””But all of a sudden we can’t make much simpler machines and can’t produce cotton swabs?”””

Just maybe the reason we can’t produce enough cotton swabs is that the prior Presidents (BUSH ONE, CLINTON, BUSH TWO, OBAMA) gave their approval thru the various Cabinet Departments for Big Pharma to move their medical supply factories to China.

Made in China not only applies to the corona virus. It also applies to many, many products that are needed during emergency situation.

Testing everybody is the most stupid idea I ever heard of.
What disease in the history if mankind has every single human being been tested for whether they are healthy and strong or not?
AIDS has been around for 42 years, is everyone tested for AIDS every year? Of course not. Not even close.
But you are now going to hold the economy hostage until everyone is tested for coronavirus?
And what happens if they get infected the next day then?

Let’s get back to being a country that finds ways to do things rather than find reasons not to.

You mean "do things" like impose ridiculous restrictions on private employers who simply want to open their damn places of business?

LOL. Are you on the website?

I'm not a fan of Fauci, but his explanation for why widespread testing is useless in this situation is 100% correct. You can't test people constantly, and no employer in his right mind would put his business at risk by relying on tests that are almost certainly not 100% accurate.

Other than antibody testing, which might (and probably does if other beer viruses are an indication) show immunity, testing is useless.

It’s common sense. So you get a test, even one of those supposed “15 minute” tests. There’s nothing stopping you from picking up the beer germ from someone 5 minutes later. It’s a scam.

You can be against Fauci and against mass testing.
Fauci must go as of last month.
Mandatory or mass testing at any time?
Not on your life.
Get tested only when you show symptoms.
No symptoms? No testing.
The lockdowns must end NOW. Period.

Agreed. But that adds time. Any delays from when the sample was provided to when it is measured and the person is notified one way or another will introduce errors.

AIDS is not really comparable, is it? You don’t get AIDs by breathing

“””So you get a test, even one of those supposed “15 minute” tests.”””

Let’s clarify.

If a person is healthy and has no symptoms, getting the 15 minute test is not needed.

If a person has a sore throat, a cough, a runny nose, a fever or generally feels bad, then the 15 minute test could save a life if the results are positive.

Early treatment and early detection is crucial.

Well, What about poor hypochondriacs?

Can’t they demand to be tested so they can complain about how poor they are and were discriminated against because there was no instant test result? What if they die in the meantime.

I don't think you have any idea how Taiwan has so far achieved good control of the COVID-19 outbreak. They have relied on many techniques that are not available here, or simply not possible to implement in our country. Take a look at the steps they took early on and see how many of them would be acceptable here in the United States. Note that none of the steps have anything to do with testing. But they do rely on things like the government having access to all of your health records on line, and the government tracking you by the location of your phone.

"Taiwan quickly mobilized and instituted specific approaches for case identification, containment, and resource allocation to protect the public health. Taiwan leveraged its national health insurance database and integrated it with its immigration and customs database to begin the creation of big data for analytics; it generated real-time alerts during a clinical visit based on travel history and clinical symptoms to aid case identification. It also used new technology, including QR code scanning and online reporting of travel history and health symptoms to classify travelers’ infectious risks based on flight origin and travel history in the past 14 days. Persons with low risk (no travel to level 3 alert areas) were sent a health declaration border pass via SMS (short message service) messaging to their phones for faster immigration clearance; those with higher risk (recent travel to level 3 alert areas) were quarantined at home and tracked through their mobile phone to ensure that they remained at home during the incubation period."

Source

Imagine how free you are in a country where in order to get through customs you need a text message on your phone from the government saying "OK, you can come in".

“Any delays from when the sample was provided to when it is measured and the person is notified one way or another will introduce errors.”

You’re always going to have errors creep in no matter what’s done, you have to decide which level is acceptable when all is said and done.

You can get AIDS by having sex. Everybody has sex, unless you are really really old or impotent. Nobody is suggesting people shouldn’t work because they have not been tested for AIDS or TB or any of a myriad of dangerous diseases.

That's nothing. In Taiwan the government shares your travel history:

"On February 18, the government announced that all hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies in Taiwan would have access to patients’ travel histories."

One of the supposed advantages of nationalized health care.

I’d much rather go with the South Dakota and Sweden’s models thank you very much.
No economy destroying lockdowns and they are both doing vastly better than New York State state with their stupid lockdowns.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

And what about the asymptomatic spreading it?

You can scream about ending the lockdown but that won’t make it happen. We need it ended asap and in a manner that gets Trump re-elected.

The only thing that does that is putting the effort that was put into ventilators and ppe’s into testing and getting creative about it.

The longer Trump waits to push it the better the chance it becomes a weapon against him.

Is he wrong about the effectiveness of the testing? I'd say that's the only question that really matters in this particular case.

He's right about it. And I don't accept his word for it because I think he's credible. It's the other way around. I think he's credible because what he says is logically true.

You're now living in a nation run by leaders who are elected by suburban Karens ... and it's pathetic to see how many Freepers have bought into this nonsense.

Stop with this nonsense already.
Exactly how is testing going to stop asymptomatic spreading?
Your testing is good for maybe one hour after the test. You take the subway in New York on you way home after the test and you’ve already contracted it from someone. You go to the grocery shop? Yep someone’s given it to you. All it takes is for you to be within 1 meter of someone who has it and for them to talk cough or sneeze. The subway trains are where most New Yorkers who have it, contracted it.
Neither Cuomo nor DeBlasio are prepared to close the subways because it’s “essential” but somehow mass testing will do it?
Don’t make me laugh.
