I’m a civil engineer by trade, and have worked on a number of grade crossing improvement projects over the years. Earlier in my career my company worked on updating the USDOT-FRA design standards for grade crossings in the aftermath of some horrific incidents at grade crossings.

Guess what ... every grade crossing I've worked on is still there, and we do our best to improve them but we don’t shut them down and disrupt thousands of travelers every day just because some nitwit drives around the gates and gets obliterated by a train.

True. But your crossings do keep the vast majority of people off of the tracks while the danger is imminent.
