Sloppy laboratory practices at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention caused contamination that rendered the nations first coronavirus tests ineffective, federal officials confirmed on Saturday.
Two of the three C.D.C. laboratories in Atlanta that created the coronavirus test kits violated their own manufacturing standards, resulting in the agency sending tests that did not work to nearly all of the 100 state and local public health labs, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
Early on, the F.D.A., which oversees laboratory tests, sent Dr. Timothy Stenzel, chief of in vitro diagnostics and radiological health, to the C.D.C. labs to assess the problem, several officials said. He found an astonishing lack of expertise in commercial manufacturing and learned that nobody was in charge of the entire process, they said.
Problems ranged from researchers entering and exiting the coronavirus laboratories without changing their coats, to test ingredients being assembled in the same room where researchers were working on positive coronavirus samples, officials said. Those practices made the tests sent to public health labs unusable because they were contaminated with the coronavirus, and produced some inconclusive results.
n a statement on Saturday, a spokeswoman for the F.D.A., Stephanie Caccomo, said, C.D.C. did not manufacture its test consistent with its own protocol.
The F.D.A. confirmed its conclusions late this week after several media outlets requested public disclosure of its inquiry, which assuredly is part of a larger federal investigation into the C.D.C. lab irregularities by the Department of Health and Human Services.
Forced to suspend the launch of a nationwide detection program for the coronavirus for a month, the C.D.C. lost credibility as the nations leading public health agency and the country lost ground in ways that continue to haunt grieving families, the sick and the worried well from one state to the next.

I think Trump is stuck between a rock and a hard place. He wants to re-open the economy and in order to do so needs Fauci and Birx to concur with his timeline.
If he were to call them out now, the media would have a field day and throw into question his timeline to get the country moving again.
I do look for Trump to do a full investigation of the entire Covid-19 crisis. Call out China, the CDC, and others AFTER the country is back on its feet. Fauci and Birx gave him poor counsel in the very beginning and I’m sure he won’t let them get away unscathed.
Anyone who thinks this was merely an F up is far too naive for the current world.
But but but they said this was trumps fault
Certainly get it out of Atlanta
Need another $25 million for the Kennedy Center building not the staff
Yup. By throwing the decision back on governors whose revenues are evaporating and not discouraging protests, he’s set the stage to remove Fakey and Scarves from the equation.
If you parse their words carefully from the last couple of pressers I think they know that.
How many boxes of Depends do you think Fauci is going through with crowds changing #FireFauci? It’s dawning on him that he’ll never be able to go back to his anonymous bureaucrat life (and probably never travel outside the beltway again).
“contaminated”, yeah, sure. IF you want to believe that CDC fked up.
Gubmint and who-knows-what-else-entities want to 10X (just a number I picked) the Covid-19 cases and got caught. The purpose is so that any draconian measure(s) are acceptable by the populace. “Never let a crisis go to waste”, as some said.
That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.
By placing the burden on the backs of the Governors, he has, as you said, shifted everything to the states. It was a brilliant move.
I’ve listened to Trump closely since the election and sometimes wince at his choice of words, but never doubt behind the sometimes fractured English lies an incredibly brilliant mind. I was not a big supporter at the beginning, but I thank God that he is running the show right now. We would be screwed if anyone other that him were in the White House.
With CDC handling things, I’m not so sure 2.5 million wouldn’t die...
Thanks Obama.
Yup. CDC can't even properly manage their own biohazard labs, so now we all get to treat our friends, the grocery store, and virtually everything else as a biohazard.
This report destroys the objectivity that Dr. Fauci has been trying to earn. He gave an impassioned story a couple of days back during the press briefing on how the CDC “made mistakes” in its initial rollout of testing. Yet he failed to admit to the details of what the “mistakes” actually were, and WHO IT WAS THAT MADE THEM.
“Mistakes were made” is NOT an admission of failures. It, in fact, blames some unknown “mistake maker”. Shame on you, Dr. Fauci.
We don’t need no steenkin’ GMP’s!
CDC IS FAUCI
FAUCI IS CDC
This story will never make it to the National News.. ...St Fauci is in charge and he will not be blemished. Ever. No matter what.
If they had left the 2nd A alone they might have been able to actually do their jobs. This distributing tests that were pre contaminated is pretty outrageous.
Exactly!
The CDC is lacking in real expertise on disease control
Liberal response - ‘Lets put government in charge of health care’.
Yet another cabel of incompetent, uncaring-boob government “workers”. Didn’t these bums have any sense of responsibility...or any integrity? Apparently not. Their agenda apparently did not include meeting their obligations and doing their job. Collecting a paycheck and figuring out their retirement benefits appears to be the daily routine of all too many government “workers” (or awtching porn at “work”). Losers.
I believe a better option is to move the cdc to the dustbin of history...filed under incompetent, irresponsible, political-agenda-driven bums. How irresponsible. Pathetic. Losers.
I bet the budget of these losers contains lots of money for travel to nice hotels for conferences where these government “workers” lie about whatever they do and promote their self-importance. These no-integrity losers should be fired and have their ill-gotten pensions yanked.
