US-Canada border restrictions extended for another 30 days

The U.S.-Canada border restrictions will be extended for another 30 days as both countries continue to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Saturday at a press briefing.

"This is an important decision and one that will keep people on both sides of the border safe," Trudeau said.

The restrictions took effect on March 21, banning any nonessential travel between the two countries. The U.S. has similar restrictions with the southern border, which allow trade to continue but have slowed down passenger traffic in ports of entry that are typically very busy.

As of Saturday, Canada has reported 30,000 cases of infection and 1,250 deaths from COVID-19. New York and Washington, two of the U.S. states that have been hit hardest by the virus, share a border with Canada.

Trudeau said on Thursday that the border between Canada and the U.S. likely won't reopen to nonessential travel anytime soon as the coronavirus outbreak continues to spread.

"There’s a recognition that as we move forward there will be special thought given to this relationship," Trudeau said at a daily briefing. "But at the same time we know that there is a significant amount of time still before we can talk about loosening such restrictions."

Oh yes, these media reports about him doing this as to build him back up. But many of us up here are not swayed by this sort of thing and are very aware of his pettiness, double standards, and overall incompetence throughout all of this affair.

The case numbers for Saskatchewan and Manitoba appear to be on a downward trend (fewer new cases and more recoveries). I expect by about the end of the month, those two provinces and even the Maritimes (as they’ve had the same sort of experience) should be ready to be opened up softly.

I made it back home just before the border closed, so I made the correct decision to leave my winter home in Arizona on March 14. I could always have flown home, but that would have stranded my brand new truck in Arizona. I’m hoping everything will be semi back to normal by August. That will allow me to reposition my old truck down in Arizona and deal with those stupid pods that fall off of my white thorn acacia tree every year. I know...first world problems.

I wonder what they are dong on Rue Canusa. The street is half in Quebec and half in Vermont. The houses on the South side are in the US, but the residents have to drive through the Port of Entry to get to the rest of the country.
