I think China or Japan use UVC to clean subway cars and also water purifiers somewhere use uvc.

These UV lighting systems are designed to be put directly into the ductwork where no eyes can see them.

Nursing homes should use it as well.

...(ozone generators)….
_____________________________

You do have to leave the area while they are running.

Ours cost $90 and is 75 watts. Overnight, it can treat 850 sq feet to the extent that it kills mice and bats.

One article advised to let in some outside air so there is more oxygen to convert to ozone.

We just move it around during the week and turn it on when leave an area.

Ok, this article is talking about low dose UVC with prolonged exposure to kill microbes. I have read several articles on this stuff in the past. This level is nothing compared to what is found in a commercial air handler and not in the same league as that used in residential HVAC either.

Please understand high dose UVC, like what is used in HVAC equipment, is dangerous stuff, that can cause tissue damage before a person realizes it. My concern is with people going out and jerry-rigging some UV device that harms them.

If anyone is interested in UV sanitizing have it installed in your duct work by a reputable company using tested and proven equipment just to be safe.

I would be a little skeptical of any UV sanitizing device I saw advertised for open exposure home sanitizing right now, there scams are a plenty.

I agree with you that there is danger. That people need to understand what they are doing and that not all UV lights are the same. That most cause skin and eye damage.

I’ve seen serveral articles on the far-UVC light that claim it is safe for humans, yet kills microbes. What I’m not sure of is how long it takes to kill a virus.

Do you know that will have that effect? I know it will kill bacteria.

Does that kill the virus?

The virus is non-living tissue. It needs a living cell to replicate. What persists on surfaces is fragments.

Ozone kills molds (living), spores (dormant), and vermin. It is used in hospital settings to kill bacteria. I’m sure it destroys, as opposed to kills, virus fragments on surfaces.

Not the same lamp technology as prior UVC sterilizer systems.

The Far-UVC is an instant-on gas discharge lamp that does not contain mercury. It produces a narrow spectrum UV light passed through a notch filter as an additional safety precaution. It kills airborne free floating pathogens in seconds.

From what I can tell - the ones in use now are UVC bulbs. I bought some in January and use them for decon. But the existing ones are harmful to eyes, skin, animals and plants. So they can only be used in empty rooms or a box.

This newer version FAR-UVC is supposed to be safe for eyes and skin so can be used while people are in the room. I think this is one of those things that should be fast-tracked into being certified and produced.

Although I wonder what “good” things might be damaged as well. I’m guessing that some germs, bacteria or what ever that are on our skin or around us are beneficial to humans? Or maybe all of the good ones are in our digestive system and well away from the light.

Above is a video using two 15W UVC bulbs on e-coli. A couple of minutes and they are destroyed. Skip to 2:30 for what I thought was the interesting part. The UVC light causes the “T” - Thymine base to combine with other “T”s and he called it a Thymine dimmer. But this reorganization of the code makes the code fail and the thing is destroyed.

Many of the UVC lights also have an added feature that produces ozone. I think ozone destroys the protective envelope around the virus and unprotected it is destroyed.

I have one that looks just like this bulb but was bought under a different name. It wouldn’t surprise me if it is the same unit. I tested my UVC light using my old glasses that turn dark in the sunlight. It worked. (I also tested the UVC safety googles to make sure they blocked the light - they did!). Although I just put the lamp in the bathroom over my decon box and hit the light as I close the door.

Above is a 25W UVC light that plugs into a regular socket. It also is the type that adds ozone, so that may or may not be good in your situation. If you put it somewhere where you can’t breath it - that would be fine.

I decon stuff when I get home with a ozone generator in the trunk of an old car. (ozone affects some plastics and rubber).

Both the UVC light and the ozone are not good for N95 masks. I ruined the straps on one mask using ozone. Both of them deteriorate the inner poly filter as well.

Best for masks is hang them inside for 3 to 4 days (I think that is overkill, but that is what the 3M inventer said). Second best is to suspend them with a wood clothing pin in the oven at 170F for 30 minutes. Again - I think that is probably longer than it needs to be, but 15 min vs 30 min is no big deal.

I have done lots of looking the last few weeks. UV bulbs are good for HVAC but to really blast a large area get an ozone generator and a few of them.

Blast means kill the bad things but also leave a nice fresh clean to the area. A serious O3 generator will do this.

Thank you, I did some research, it does, and ‘destroys’ is the correct term. Thank you.

I have the UVC bulbs for a “station” set up for shoes, phones, glasses, etc.

I have a 60W, 100 cubic-foot/min ozone generator for a large box or car trunk or in the car. It would work in a room if it had too. It might not hurt to run it in the bedroom once in awhile. I was thinking more if one of us ends up sick and then use it inside periodically.

My idea is to keep the virus outside the house. Pain in the butt though to decon everything, strip and shower after every time out to the store. Although I try to keep the trips to the store (for four sets of people) to once a week.

Next up: A run on UV lights.
*********************************************************************************
Already happened. I was researching and found an article that rated available UVC lights —every single one was out of stock. So I wound up getting a small one that was suitable for use with a small box for the mail.

I also bought some air purifiers that have the UVC light and run those for the main areas I am in.

As it was explained to me by them, the UV light especially UVC is very good for most germs and bacteria but they said that for the virus itself, they would be making a fortune right now if they knew that they could advertise that it killed covid-19. But she specifically told me not to waste my time buying their lamps to build what I was going to call just Christmas trees of lights so that we could decontaminate the church in between services and even other things that we have going here at the church. So this is strange that I read in articles that it will kill viruses yet the people who sell the light bulbs told me directly that UVC will not kill covid-19 nor did they have a bulb to recommend that would. I have however heard that an ozone machine will just about kill anything also if you can put up with the stink
