I guess they finally fixed the engines on it.
When it was first placed in service the engines kept breaking down it had to be towed.
The last time the French Navy had a significant victory was when they forced the British Fleet sent to relieve Cornwallis to withdraw from the Chesapeake. Not much before and nothing since.
They did get it working, but the reactor shielding is questionable and the thing is still nicknamed “The Boat Of The Damned” by French naval crew.
They aren’t even the best wines anymore and lost that fight twice.

Considering that the ship's namesake and much of the French populace were once so prickly toward les Anglo-Americans, that is quite a turn in national attitude. These days, the French are more likely to mention with pride that they were America's first ally. In Normandy every June, young Frenchmen proudly dress up as WW II American GIs to reenact and celebrate what they call not the Invasion, but the Liberation. Enough time has passed that the French have forgiven Americans for doing them the favor of running the Nazis out and giving them back their country.
Charles de Gaulle was a first rate dick head. I’m not talking about the ship.
