The mayor of Jacksonville, Fla., said that the city's beaches and parks are will reopen at 5 p.m. Friday, but with restrictions as the coronavirus outbreak continues across the state and country.
The beaches and parks will be open for essential activities only, which per Gov. Ron DeSantis' (R) executive order include walking, biking, hiking, fishing, running, swimming and surfing as long as social distancing guidelines are followed.
This can be the beginning of the pathway back to normal life, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry said Thursday. Please respect and follow these limitations. Stay within the guidelines for your safety as well as for the safety of your neighbors.
Additionally, parks will resume their normal operating hours, but the city's beaches will only be open for use between 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and then 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
Certain park activities such as overnight camping and organized group gatherings are still prohibited, according to Curry's statement.

This is a small step but as more and more of this happens it starts to build momentum.
And so it begins...
yes.
Good!
Yep, Cuomo can keep NY closed until there are zero residents living there.
Yes. Lenny Curry was shutting down Jax as soon as he could, a big mistake, and only recently shut down the beaches (bigger mistake). In his announcement, he said he had spoken with Gov. De Santis (who was widely criticized for not being on the shut it all down bandwagon), and I bet he was told that it was time to stop acting like Herr Curry.
Some of the governors are bad, but some of the municipal and county authorities are worse. Little dictators all, and enjoying it.
This is how it will play out IMHO
Red states and communities will begin to ease restrictions while blue states will keep the lid on tight.
People in blue areas will see those in red areas finally getting out of their houses and living their lives.
To offset this I predict the Fake News Media will run a rash of stories of predictive spikes in infection & deaths. And they will find one single case of infection and try to make Mount Everest out of a mole hill.
People, the 2017-18 Flu season had more deaths assigned to it 61K per the CDC.GOV web site. COVID-19 has to date 31K and that is with them padding the numbers.
I hope the Dems pull out all the stops to prevent people from going back to work. It will be a fresh reminder come election day.
Lenny Curry is/was a smart, forthright conservative mayor who pretty much went off the deep end when the COVID-19 hit. He almost immediately shut down Jacksonville (which includes all of Duval County), its business, parks, beaches, libraries, schools, everything. It was a big surprise to many, me included. He also defined the enforcement of new rules which seem draconian for an otherwise good Mayor. Folks in Jacksonville and communities in Duval County are getting antsy to get back to normal. It’s good to see that Lenny has begun to realize that he may have screwed the pooch.
And boat ramps in South Carolina reopened, but not beaches or bathrooms. But only 2 allowed in a boat if not family members. https://www.wyff4.com/article/south-carolina-public-boat-landings-ramps-to-reopen-with-restrictions-mcmaster/32176894
This is EXCELLENT. Let a few brave souls go out and show that there is not an alien death ray ready to vaporize anyone who steps outside their door.
The young and the restless will lead the way to this recovery . . .
Living here in Jax, the virus has taken the pressure of Curry for the fiasco involving the sale of JEA.
There is a Federal Investigation underway over how the whole thing was handled, I would not be surprised to see a number of people go down over this with Curry potentially caught up in it...
I voted for Curry and generally like what he was doing, but the JEA scandal and now the way he’s handled the virus are giving me second thoughts...
We need to stop the Governors from “moving the goal posts” (as I believe Tucker Carlson put it.)
The shutdowns almost certainly slowed the spread of the virus, but we need to remember that we didn’t know whether even the shutdowns would work well enough to keep from overwhelming the healthcare system. We could have been, right now, looking at half the residents of U.S. nursing homes dying of Covid-19 despite shutdowns. The point is, we didn’t know, so we took serious precautions.
But now we know this: with shutdowns the virus is manageable. But the shutdowns were an extreme response, so start opening things up again and let owners and customers decide how safe they want to be. Some owners will cater to customers who don’t give a rat’s behind and others will cater to the cautious. We won’t need a Governor’s one-size-fits-all rules to decide how to get together again. We’ll each make that decision on our own.
As that happens, maybe the healthcare system will become burdened, or maybe it won’t. If it does (in an area) well, we now know what works and can re-institute limited shutdowns. After all, we already know a full shutdown is too strict from the experience we just went through.
Back to the goal posts. We shut down to keep from overwhelming the hospitals; we didn’t shut down to keep people from ever being infected. We should all know that we now have only two choices: Reopen the economy and assume the risk of exposure while making your own individual rules for the risk you want to take, or move the goal posts and leave it closed up tight to fruitlessly attempt to stop the virus from spreading while ensuring a depression.
Not only is that moving the goal posts; it won’t stop the virus anyway. We know how to slow it if we need to. Open up. Another month or two of this and our healthcare system will be bankrupted. Try to get care then.
