U.S. stock futures surged on Thursday night after a report said a Gilead Sciences drug was showing effectiveness in treating the coronavirus. The move pointed to a jump for the stock market on Friday.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 700 points, or about 3%. S&P 500 futures gained 2.8% while Nasdaq 100 futures were up by 1.8%.
Gilead shares jumped by 14% in after-hours trading after STAT news reported that a Chicago hospital treating coronavirus patients with Remdesivir in a trial were recovering rapidly from severe symptoms. The publication cited a video it obtained where the trial results were discussed.

Nancy Pelosi and other Demon DemocRATs most saddened!
At one time ebola was a death sentence. Thanks to American innovation, it now has a survivability rate of 90%+.
I have said the same will happen to Covid-19. It was only a matter of time.
NEVER bet against the USA.
Trump is announcing guidelines for reopening too.
Probably has more to do with that than one drug.
Bill Gates saddened (no desperate need for a vaccine...)
Great news...in October of 2021 when its maybe approved.
The point to be taken from this is that it is NOT THE GOVERNMENT that makes this possible. If there are two things all Americans should take from this, they are that we do not prepare well for emergencies, and we don’t do government well, at all, ever.
True
“Chicago hospital treating severe Covid-19 patients with Gilead Sciences antiviral medicine remdesivir in a closely watched clinical trial is seeing rapid recoveries in fever and respiratory symptoms, with nearly all patients discharged in less than a week, STAT has learned.”
Then we learn
The best news is that most of our patients have already been discharged, which is great. Weve only had two patients perish, said Kathleen Mullane, the University of Chicago infectious disease specialist overseeing the remdesivir studies for the hospital. “
Incredibly, the phrase “nearly all” is assumed to mean the same thing as “most”.
But the market doesn’t move based on news articles, it moves based on someone at the hospital telling someone at a hedge fund something that no one else knows. So despite the shaky statnews.com article, I would bet the drug is actually working very well.
This drug was suggested right from the beginning.
I would like to know how it compares with the far cheaper and more available HCQ.
Wait Gilead! Isn’t that an evil big pharma?
How many Democrat Governors will ban it?!
Boeing is part of it. Surging after hours
Hopefully, HCQ will be found effective for treatment if started early and this expensive drug will be useful for more advanced cases.
agreed
Remdesivir...been out there since the beginning of this...
Im hoping this drug along with HCQ/zpack/zinc can be the cure that we need..so many people have died, many didnt have to die, they could have been saved, but it was ALL politics, Trump says give it a try and the Dems say no we need more people to die
New Sermo survey of Covid-19 treaters released yesterday:
*Hydroxychloroquine use in NY has doubled since March 25.
*HCQ continues to grow.
*HCQ and plasma seen as the most successful treatments.
The top treatments that have been used/seen used and reported as very or extremely effective among COVID treaters (N= 1337) include:
46% plasma from recovered patients (n=363); 40% Hydroxychloroquine (n=875); 38% high dose steroids during a cytokine storm (n=556)
- Usage of anti-HIV drugs (e.g. Lopinavir plus Ritonavir), drugs to treat the flu (e.g. Oseltamivir), and plasma from recovered patients remains steady week over week, while use of non-approved drugs (e.g. Remdesivir) decreased slightly.
- Survey: Physicians who treat COVID patients in Italy, Spain, France, and China have higher perceptions of Hydroxychloroquines efficacy vs the US (~50% vs 29%).
- Survey: Italy and France had the highest increase in COVID treaters having prescribed Hydroxychloroquine wave over wave; an increase from 50% to 83% for Italy and an increase from 20% to 50% for France.
“Interesting that those on the front lines currently see Remdesivir as less effective than hydroxychloroquine or even steroids.” - analysis

Is it one of those bad big pharma companies run by evil white men?
CNBC can shove it. Futures are up on Trump’s press conference.
