U.S. stock futures surged on Thursday night after a report said a Gilead Sciences drug was showing effectiveness in treating the coronavirus. The move pointed to a jump for the stock market on Friday.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 700 points, or about 3%. S&P 500 futures gained 2.8% while Nasdaq 100 futures were up by 1.8%.
Gilead shares jumped by 14% in after-hours trading after STAT news reported that a Chicago hospital treating coronavirus patients with Remdesivir in a trial were recovering rapidly from severe symptoms. The publication cited a video it obtained where the trial results were discussed.

Boeing announced starting more assembly operations next week, asked suppliers to resume shipping.
Intellectual property? Surely you jest.
Yes...if Obama had said what President Trump did...They’d be lionzing him..
How much will Remdesivir cost? I’ve read $1000.00 per dose.
HCQ costs $20 per dose.
Hello?
There is a balm in Gilead
Thank you for explaining this is due to date post clinical trial info. That makes better sense.
Two hundred days to go.
Things need to turn around soon.
simplistic but hope gives a little perspective
After looking closer, this study looks like a phase 3 trial which is sort of a large case series which looks at whether a therapy is better than existing treatments. Since there are no completed double blind treatments, this apparently is looking at two different treatment regimens (length of treatment). So far, this is just a “leak” from a single testing site, so we need a lot more information to know for sure what is happening, but nevertheless very encouraging.
disclosure (I’m not an expert on clinical trials by any means)
Well, yesterday I did get my stimulus check and it was exactly for $1019.
I have a feeling if this really does work, the left will conveniently forget that Trump has mentioned remdesivir as a promising treatment more than once and that he first mentioned it at the same time he initially discussed hydroxychloroquine.
LOL. People have been using Remdesivir for 6 weeks already, as well as HCQ. But of course HCQ doesn’t generate huge profits for a Wall St. firm, so the media bashes it, even though Remdesivir has side effects too.
True Gates is disappointed. But he can still do anything he desires with the crooks at the UN and WHO cabals.
NONE! Because it will make Big Pharma billions, and their political puppets are all for it. HCQ is generic, and costs pennies, so it must be demonized.
I’ve been following twitter accounts of medical people and posting links to articles about remarkable recoveries of patients getting HCQ/Zpack.
The truth is HCQ/Zpack doesn’t always work. As one doctor said, the disease sometimes progresses. Maybe HCQ/Zpack wasn’t given early enough to prevent the cytokine storm happening, or given too late to reverse lung damage when the patient is on a vent. In many cases remdesivir works, or tocilizumab, or now plasma therapy. Doctors around the world are now using HCQ/Zpack as the first treatment against covid19, but as you said, remdesivir could be a safety net if patients deteriorate.
I bought the VIX at 14, rode it up to 53 and bailed when it briefly dropped to 44. After that it went up to 80.
But, you are clear and concise in your explanations tho. For that I thank you for taking the time to do so.
Indeed. They are the company behind PrEP, aka Truvada, for HIV prevention.
HCQ has been generic for a long time. Remdesivir is new, about 5 years old.
Remdesivir has been around a long time and used by the chicoms to treat covid. Why is this news and why is it the “reason” for the stock market futures rally?
I am doubtful it is about Remdesivir. More likely it is about the back to work prospects and plan.
How dishonest can the media get. Pretty damned dishonest.
HCQ is already an effective therapeutic.
Giliad isn't a part of the Dow 30, aka the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
Even if Gilead were to go up 100% after market closure...there is NO WAY that would move futures ~700 points. None.
The futures moved like that on Trump's plan (recommendations) on how to "reopen" our country.
And to a lesser degree, the news that BA (Boeing) is planning to restart some aircraft manufacturing. BA, on the other hand, IS a Dow 30 stock. Any big news on any of them can...and does...cause futures to move significantly one way or the other.
But in this particular case...this ~700 point move is much more about Trumps plan to get our country working again.
