Senate schedules more pro forma sessions after Trump demands adjournment (Mitch blocking recess appointments)

The Senate scheduled another two weeks of pro forma sessions Thursday, just a day after President Trump demanded senators either return to town or adjourn.

The Senate is now slated to meet roughly every three days until May 4, when senators are expected to return to Washington.

Initially, the Senate had planned on recessing through Friday, with lawmakers returning on Monday. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced Wednesday that he was extending the recess in consultation with medical professionals and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.).

“As the country continues working together to flatten the curve, following the advice of health experts, the full Senate is not expected to travel back to Washington D.C. sooner than Monday, May 4th. All members will receive at least 24 hours’ notice if this changes," McConnell said in a statement.

His statement didn't mention pro forma sessions, but the Senate had been widely expected to schedule the additional, nonlegislative meetings until lawmakers return to Washington.

Pro forma sessions are constitutionally required to happen every three days unless both parties, in both chambers, can agree to pass an adjournment resolution. The Senate will now meet on April 20, 23, 27 and 30.

Trump railed against the Senate during a White House press conference Wednesday for holding the sessions, which prevent him from making recess appointments.

"Trump railed against the Senate during a White House press conference Wednesday for holding the sessions, which prevent him from making recess appointments."

Folks, these sessions aren't real meetings of the Senate. They are paper meetings that block Trump from making recess appointments. The Senate GOP has been doing this for three years, to block Trump. They don't want MAGA people nominated to high positions, and they've succeeded in blocking them.

The Senate GOP is still dominated by Bush League Republicans that want to blunt as much of MAGA as they can.

Trump laid it all out yesterday. It was brilliant. He’s right. The president has ALOT OF POWER Constitutionally. It’s a fact

The lawmakers CANNOT stay away from DC now. He has shamed them

a simple google will tell you that, as frequently happens at FR, people are blaming the wrong guy. but you have to actually want to understand what you're griping about:

“Leader McConnell had a conversation today with the president to discuss Senate Democrats’ unprecedented obstruction of the president’s well-qualified nominees and shared his continued frustration with the process,” a McConnell spokesman said. “The Leader pledged to find ways to confirm nominees considered mission-critical to the COVID-19 pandemic, but under Senate rules will take consent from Leader Schumer.”

Read the Constitution.

Obama isn’t president. They have a Republican president, and they’re still doing it. They don’t want him appointing MAGA people, only people that the GOP establishment approves of, so they keep him doing any recess appointments.

Because the GOP establishment doesn’t want Trump to have a free hand in appointing people to his cabinet and sub-cabinet. They’re afraid he’ll appoint immigration hawks, and opponents of neocon foreign policy.

Also they want to keep him under their thumb.

They are as real as the Senate wants them to be.

This is a separation of powers issue. The Senate sets its own rules and it alone determines when it is in session. President Obama got slammed down hard by the Supreme Court over this in 2014.
