Airline passengers undergo Covid-19 blood tests before boarding
CNN ^ | April 16, 2020 | Karla Cripps

Dubai-based airline Emirates has begun carrying out Covid-19 blood tests on passengers at the airport prior to flights.

According to a statement released by the airline, the first rapid Covid-19 blood tests took place on Wednesday at Dubai International Airport, with passengers on a flight to Tunisia all reportedly tested before departure.

The tests were conducted by the Dubai Health Authority at the Group Check-in area of Terminal 3 and results were available within 10 minutes. Emirates claims to be the world's first airline to conduct such tests.

"We are working on plans to scale up testing capabilities in the future and extend it to other flights," said Adel Al Redha, Emirates Chief Operating Officer, in the statement. "This will enable us to conduct on-site tests and provide immediate confirmation for Emirates passengers traveling to countries that require COVID-19 test certificates."

The airline has not stated whether any passengers would be refused boarding based on the results of the test. CNN Travel has reached out to Emirates for more info. Serology (blood) tests aren't meant to diagnose active coronavirus infections. Rather, they check for proteins in the immune system, known as antibodies, through a blood sample. Their presence means a person was exposed to the virus and developed antibodies against it.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration, in the early days of an infection when the body's immune response is still building, antibodies may not be detected. Still, the tests will likely be viewed as a step in the right direction by air travelers, as the world grapples with the question of when and how to safely ease travel bans.

According to CNN, Emirates is administering a serology (blood) test which will only show if you have HAD the disease and are probably immune (although the certainty of this is unknown). Does this mean that only people with herd immunity are going to be allowed to board the plane?

I don't understand the rationale behind this.

Soon: "Your COVID Certification Papers, please."

Glad to see this going on - it’s about the only way to get people flying again, given present circumstances.

I gave up flying when the TSA was invented to harass Americans.
Not going to give blood to get on their airplane.

The interesting question is—will the elites be subject to the same rules as everyone else when they fly private jets.

Keep an eye on that issue—that will be the “tell”...

When the TSA was created I said we will be strip searched before boarding and soon required to provide blood tests and papers.

Welcome to 1984.

“ Would you refer covid or non-covid seating?”

“ You are over 60. Do you have proof of medical clearance to fly?”

“Sorry Sir, no antibodies, no boarding pass”

Ditto on both counts.

There is no rationale in the article. A serology test tells is you have had the disease in the past. It says the test will not be used to deny people boarding.

It is useless for determining if you are sick. They are doing temperature checks to determine if you are sick, but there is still concern you may be asymptomatic without a fever and contagious.

Did you find something that explains why they are doing this? If yes, please share it.

“covid or non-covid seating?”

LOL. I like that.

Reminds me of the ridiculous Smoking / Non-Smoking sections. Somebody once said asking for the non-smoking section is like asking for the non-chlorine section of the swimming pool.

OK, you and TexasGator can explain WHY they are doing this?

The test tells IF you have had the disease in the past (maybe).
It doesn’t say if you are currently sick.
It doesn’t keep you off the plain.

So, please explain the rationale for doing this? Is it solely to make ignorant people feel good, that the airline is doing SOMETHING? It makes zero sense to me.

I look forward to your elucidation.
