Dubai-based airline Emirates has begun carrying out Covid-19 blood tests on passengers at the airport prior to flights.
According to a statement released by the airline, the first rapid Covid-19 blood tests took place on Wednesday at Dubai International Airport, with passengers on a flight to Tunisia all reportedly tested before departure.
The tests were conducted by the Dubai Health Authority at the Group Check-in area of Terminal 3 and results were available within 10 minutes. Emirates claims to be the world's first airline to conduct such tests.
"We are working on plans to scale up testing capabilities in the future and extend it to other flights," said Adel Al Redha, Emirates Chief Operating Officer, in the statement. "This will enable us to conduct on-site tests and provide immediate confirmation for Emirates passengers traveling to countries that require COVID-19 test certificates."
The airline has not stated whether any passengers would be refused boarding based on the results of the test. CNN Travel has reached out to Emirates for more info. Serology (blood) tests aren't meant to diagnose active coronavirus infections. Rather, they check for proteins in the immune system, known as antibodies, through a blood sample. Their presence means a person was exposed to the virus and developed antibodies against it.
According to the US Food and Drug Administration, in the early days of an infection when the body's immune response is still building, antibodies may not be detected. Still, the tests will likely be viewed as a step in the right direction by air travelers, as the world grapples with the question of when and how to safely ease travel bans.

Would you fly right now?
You can thank George W. Bush for that. That POS rino.
No.
But I would not fly even if this wasn’t happening.
Havent set foot on a plane since nov 2001 and won’t be doing so ever again.
Of course not.
I have flown charter and there’s no groping.
It still doesn’t answer my question. What the hell good is an antibody test for getting a “COVID-19 test certificate”?
At this point, the only thing that makes sense if that you 1) tested negative for being sick today AND 2) that you have immunity based on an antibody test. You should get on the plane only if you pass #1 and #2.
You can get a “pass” on your antibody test, but that may not mean you are not going to get sick again.
I’d much rather know the person next to me is not sick NOW.
So, whoever is requiring these “test certificates” is not thinking this through.
Give blood, but you may find that blood is not enough
Give blood, and there are some who’ll say it’s not enough
Give blood, but don’t expect to ever see reward
Give blood, you can give it all but still you’re asked for more
Give blood, but it could cost more than your dignity
Give blood, parade your pallor in iniquity
Give blood, they will cry and say they’re in your debt
Give blood, but then they’ll sigh and they will soon forget
We’re heading for the day of reckoning, I’m telling ya. It’s all building up to something, something that can only be redeemed with fire.
It says they started this only on their Dubai - Tunisia flights.
Geez!
” ... and provide immediate confirmation for Emirates passengers traveling to countries that require COVID-19 test certificates.”
There are a lot more transmittable diseases than CV. Why not test for all of them??
OK, it’s obvious they are doing it to meet somebody’s bureaucratic requirement.
But I’m asking a bigger question. Does that bureaucratic requirement for some “certificate” actually do anything to make flying safer? I’m arguing that it does not.
Orwell was dead on in his vision of big brother/big government. Those who said 9/11 will eviscerate our liberty were dead on. China flu is the continuing rotting of our liberty.
I vote for MAD COW DZ Tests.....
