In point of fact, you're correct. The Corps has been there, before. The danger area is between Vera Cruz and Campeche. Indicated as Campeche Sound.

Easily within range of air cover from Brownsville and Corpus Christie...

How far out does the Coast Guard go?

Now that we know this is a possibility we need to keep jets at McDill on alert
send them out to destroy the pirates

The Mexican Coast Guard! About twenty yeas ago I was on a dive boat one Sunday afternoon off Cozumel when we found a dead body floating in the water. We called the Mexican Coast Guard, but were told “Go away, we’re closed”. We had to catch the body in a canvas tarp and haul it to shore. It wasn’t in a condition where we wanted to bring it on board.

Only 200 miles, it looks like :- /

The Coast Guard has law enforcement powers within U.S. waters, which extend 200 miles from shores, and on international waters. Coast Guard authority supersedes that of the U.S. Navy in terms of law enforcement — a Coast guard captain can halt, board and even seize any vessel without a warrant, court order or direct orders from a superior, including U.S. Navy vessels.

In my fantasies, I dream of an attempted piracy and the ship comes into harbor with the pirates swinging from the cargo hoists.

There’d be a bloody ruckus from the pearl-clutchers but it would send a message, as well as providing the warm and fuzzies to people who think like me.

Thanks I did not know that. Good to know
In the moments of a pirate attack unless the CG is near by I say send some F15s from Tyndall AFB

There were an average of 16 pirate attacks each month off Mexico last year. Pirates attack offshore oil rigs, the ships that supply them, and cruise ships, as well as other vessels. No arrests were made.

Dispatch the Navy from Key West to send them to Davey Jones' Locker!
