Gov. DeSantis sets up Florida ‘reopening’ task force, names new unemployment boss
Orlando Sentinel ^ | April 15, 2020 | Steven Lemongello

Following President Trump’s lead, Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday created a task force to plan for the “resurgence and reopening of Florida" from the coronavirus shutdown.

DeSantis also made a major shuffle in leadership by sidelining the state’s Department of Economic Opportunity head Ken Lawson and putting Management Services chief Jonathan Satter in charge of the state’s beleaguered unemployment compensation system.

The governor also notably distanced himself from Florida Surgeon General Scott Rivkees’ comments Monday that social distancing could last as long as a year or more until there was a vaccine.

Trump, who is eager to “reopen” the country and resume normal business following the economic damage from the coronavirus, named his daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner to what he called an “Opening the Country” panel.

DeSantis, who cited numbers showing new coronavirus cases were flattening following state and local shutdown orders and social distancing, did not announce any timetable or names for his task force at a news conference in Tallahassee. But he said it would be made up of a mix of people in government, business, education and other walks of life.

“We still don’t know everything about this coronavirus, and we obviously watch the data on an hourly basis, even a minute-by-minute basis,” DeSantis said. “But it obviously is prudent to start thinking about and planning for people getting back to work and getting society functioning in a more healthy way.”

Positive. But he’s got to get local authorities to open up. In Jacksonville, the mayor shut down all sorts of things almost immediately. No need...it’s a young city, the old folks were already staying indoors...but the police have been assigned to monitor us. They broke up a block party (people standing in their own yards) but in the mean time 4 young black guys were killed by other young black guys in the usual (unpoliced) part of town.

This happened in a neighborhood near mine (I’m in CA). A few people were standing in their front yards, 6 feet away from each other, and some neighborhood brown shirt called the police who broke it up as it was a “gathering.”

But “gatherings” inside packed grocery stores are always fine.

And miles of extremely opens space at the beach and parks remains closed. One of the dumbest moves. He’s trying to hide from the JEA mess. He’s happy for the diversion

Probably. There was no reason to close the beaches. Theoretically, all the parks are closed too but so far they haven’t enforced this for groups of two or three joggers or walkers. Meanwhile, the residents of NW Jax keep killing each other along with any unfortunate small children sitting in their line of fire. Do something about that, Lenny.

Why do they need task forces?

Time for public health officials to go back to their cubicles and let the economy reopen.

You know, I drove into “town” for the first time in three weeks and 9 out of 10 businesses were open...except for city, county govt.

Well, not to defend idiots but the SG may have made a true statement. China re-opened about 10 days ago now they’re having to lock it back down after a surge in new cases. So maybe the state can be reopened but may have to close again when cases jump. This yo-yo effect might go on for a few years. IMO there needs to be plenty of HCQ treatments on hand to respond to periodic outbreaks and surplus hospital capacity.

Personally, I don’t think there will ever be an effective vaccine. I think it’s like Epstein Barr, AIDS, Lupus and others which can hide out and evade the immune system. Like AIDS, when the immune system is weakened it strikes and goes for the kill.

The key here is finding out who the brownshirt neighbor is. Everyone has the right to meet their accuser, don't they?
