LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Midway through his daily update in Frankfort on Wednesday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear acknowledged the commotion just outside his briefing room, a group of protesters demanding the state re-open its economy.
Everybody should be able to express their opinions, he said about the protesters, who were clearly audible during the WAVE 3 News broadcast of Beshears news conference. They believe we should open the economy. It would absolutely kill people. We know were not to that point. My job isnt to make the popular decision, but the right decision.
Among the chants heard: Abortion is not essential, Families are essential, We want to work, Open up Kentucky and Let freedom ring.
Also Wednesday, Beshear reported 88 new cases and seven more deaths because of the coronavirus crisis that has shaken the globe for several months. He said the number of new cases is understated because of a new testing system introduced Wednesday that likely will be fully up to speed Thursday.
The updated figures push the total number of cases and deaths across the state to 2,291 and 122, respectively.
Beshear also announced a new partnership with the University of Louisville Hospital that will provide testing to health care workers there to see if theyve built up immunity to the coronavirus.
We greatly appreciate this partnership. he said. We really look forward to its potential.
The governor added that he plans to work with Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine to collaborate on a plan to get back to normal with the states north of Kentucky.
Were gonna continue that cooperation in planning how we will eventually ease restrictions and open up the economy, he said. Well do it thoughtfully to make sure we dont see a reemergence of the virus.
Beshear said talk of preparing for a return to normal should not be mistaken for an actual return to normal.
We still believe we are in the escalation, so weve got to keep at it, he said. View this like we are at halftime.
The governor provided an update on several other key statistics as well:
+ 28,324 total tests have been administered across Kentucky
+ At least 807 people have been hospitalized, 412 of whom are still in a hospital
+ A total of 367 patients have spent time in an ICU, 252 of whom are still in an ICU
+ At least 862 people have recovered
Good! This is spreading.
Don’t know what state (or more possibly states) it’ll be in, but open rebellion is not a matter of if, but when.
Get out the popcorn and watch the governors run and hide, because it’s not gonna be nice. It would be very nice of they are genuinely scared,
This needs to go viral, will NY ever wake up and accuse Cuomo and deblasio of murder
They are not for keeping the vast majority of healthy people locked inside.
The peasants are revolting.
May DemocRATS rot.
Beshear said the other day that if he saves one life it will be worth remaining on lockdown. “Just one life” cannot be the standard. The original goal of not overwhelming the healthcare system must be the standard.
I’ve had to be out almost daily since the shutdowns started. Early on it was a ghost town. Now it looks like traffic as usual in the few places open for business. About 2/3 of the people are wearing masks; all are respecting social distancing.
Right now, people want to get back to work. Once unemployment checks kick in, their attitudes may change. But I can guarantee you, most won’t be staying in their homes which is the point of this entire lockdown.
It’s going to dawn on most of these governors that they can accomplish more by doing less, if they just target the most vulnerable segments of society with cost-effective programs and abandon the general social welfare approach. I mean this, if you spent 10% of the total being proposed for the bailouts on every conceivable safety measure around care homes and any other identifiable hot spots, then you would get better results there than this will bring, and otherwise not run into very much casual spread. Also the casual spread will be among healthier people speeding up the necessary herd immunity. Are we there yet? Probably in many places, maybe not in metro NYC and a few other specific locations.
Asshole politicians that say If it saves just one life it will be worth it! needs a baseball bat upside the head.
There are many out there who will not be satisfied with the government crumbs. Good!!
So this Rat POS is the same page as DeWine. Of course they are. They are getting out there to crush the Presidents reboot plan you watch.
c’mon man, it’s for the children!
This must spread to every state. It is also happening in Michigan. Next up: California, New York, Jew Jersey, Oregon, Washington, New Mexico, Connecticut, Illinois, and every other state. Start with those, the rest will get the message. This is tyranny, these RAT governors are taking away our liberty and private property. Remember Fort Sumter!!!
The peasants are revolting.....They certainly are.
Agree but seriously what is the citizenry to do? Not only are various levels of government restricting our Constitutional Rights but with mail in ballots our votes will become moot.
When this all started here in Kentucky, Baby-Face-Beshear was quite popular but it looks like the tide is starting to turn. Hopefully, I will have a full blown rebellion on his hand before this is overwith.
