Pandemic Upends Life in European Cities Where Border Had Vanished
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 4.15.2020 | James Marson

The coronavirus pandemic has resurrected national boundaries that had all but faded away, upending businesses and lives. Perhaps nowhere is the change more dramatic than in Europe, which has spent years erasing borders.

On the German side of the border with Poland, a laundry that washes hospital bed sheets is struggling to cope without almost half its staff, who used to commute from Poland. Polish workers, including doctors and nurses, have to decide whether to stay on the eastern side of the border or rent private rooms in Germany to keep working. A Polish business consultant has been paying truck drivers to spirit across the border documents—and white sausage for an Easter meal.

“It’s as if I’m smuggling,” said Agnieszka Zdziabek-Bollmann, a consultant who advises cross-border businesses and workers.

What is doing most damage to EU’s open borders philosophy was the decision to open the borders to third world immigrants.

That provoked England’s exit, it provoked eastern Europe to defy Brussels, Italy is on the brink, and nationalist movements on the rise across Europe.

People were willing to put up with abuse from Brussels to a point, in exchange for an open Europe... open to each other. The flood of immigrants promoted by Brussels has caused countries to question the Union, and the Union’s poor response, lack of help, to Italy and Spain during the epidemic is making people think, “Why do we need them?”

Initially it was deemed a necessity - what with dangerously low birth rate and generous socialist/socilaist-lite benefits to their original citizens.

It is liberalism and socialism which are rapidly feeding the decline of Europe

The tendency of not wanting to work, or to get some cushy Public service job , and then all the sudden the bureaucracy out numbers the overtaxed workers- is your typical problem face by these European governments

Margaret Thatcher put it perfectly as much socialists do fine until they run out of everybody else’s money
