US clinical trials of Hydroxychloroquine hit ‘warp speed,’ could show in weeks whether it works on Coronavirus

Researchers are working as quickly as science will allow to determine whether hydroxychloroquine, a decades-old malaria drug touted by President Donald Trump as a potential “game changer” in curtailing the Covid-19 pandemic, is effective in fighting the coronavirus.

Federal health regulators have fast-tracked approvals for coronavirus research, allowing scientists across the nation to skip through months of red tape on potential treatments and vaccines for the deadly virus. On March 24, researchers at NYU Langone launched one of the nation’s largest hydroxychloroquine studies and enrolled their first patient 10 days later. It’s one of more than a dozen formal studies in the U.S. looking at the treatment for CV-19, according to ClinicalTrials.gov.

The drug is proven to work in treating Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, but not Covid-19. A handful of small studies on its use in coronavirus patients published in France and China has raised hope that the drug might help fight the virus.

NEW YORK STUDIES

The study at NYU Langone is one of two being run by New York state. It’s a randomized controlled trial designed to determine whether hydroxychloroquine is any better than a placebo in preventing Covid-19. Co-led with the University of Washington, the clinical study aims to test 2,000 adults who have been in close contact with confirmed coronavirus patients, but haven’t exhibited any symptoms, to see if the drug can lessen the chances of getting the infection.

“We’re trying to move at warp speed,” Dr. Anna Bershteyn, an assistant professor at NYU Langone and the study’s co-principal investigator, said in an interview with CNBC. “The fastest an answer can possibly come we think is in two months.”

The New York State Department of Health, in partnership with the University of Albany, is conducting a so-called observational study that researchers hope can shed some insight

They are backtracking because they know it works, and are trying to cover for saying it wouldn’t work.

Nothing works until experts say it works. All the people walking away cured from the disease don’t count.

Of course it works, especially if given early.

True, someone fully engaged might not get the full benefit (although most do), but this treatment works.

Sure, lets wait until September to decide to use it! Only another 10,000 dead. (NY still won’t let Dr’s prescribe - Thanks Cuomo!)

Simple - get back to work - take employee temperatures 2x a day, if you heat up, get the COVID test; if you have it, get the Hydroxy, Z-Pak, Zinc treatment, stay home, get better.

This concept of - only go back if you had it - is insulting. All of us who did the right thing - stayed home, distanced, etc., now can’t go back to work b/c we did the right thing! Bull. We have a treatment, vaccine in 9 months - let’s get back to work.

Not perfect, but better than a bankrupt economy and depression. That will kill far more.

Researchers are working as quickly as science Grants will allow, to reach a forgone conclusion.

“US clinical trials of Hydroxychloroquine hit ‘warp speed,’ could show in weeks whether it works on Coronavirus”

Let me FIX it....

US clinical trials of Hydroxychloroquine hit ‘warp speed,’ WILL show in weeks THAT it works on Coronavirus

Fauci is waiting for a very expensive vaccine and will try to line us up with "live or die".

Vaccines and meds are two different things. If you don't have a vaccine, you use the meds.

Fauci promised a vaccine for HIV in 1996. Scarf lady was working with him at the time.

Almost 25 years later....still no vaccine....but some really expensive meds.

“The fastest an answer can possibly come we think is in two months.”

Not good enough. We're at war.

This is not necessarily good news. Even if it is helpful/effective, a poorly run clinical trial could just as easily come to an inaccurate conclusion that it doesn’t help. Good luck getting it after a negative or equivocal clinical trial.

So it’s two studies underway in New York: the formal NYU study which is expecting results no sooner than June, and the observational study by NYSDoH/University of Albany which is expecting results the last week of April.

The latter by the New York State Department of Health is the one Trump and Cuomo were talking up earlier. In fact, Trump said he was expecting to start seeing results last week, but that never happened.

Quite a bit of “fog of war” going on it seems.

Nothing works until experts say it works. All the people walking away cured from the disease don’t count.

BUT, the experts don't need any data to randomly say thousands have died because of coronavirus, like they just did in NY. No testing was done, it's a scientific assumption based on....anecdotal evidence.

I had an 80 something patient who was on it for 10 days....came in real sick with lots of comorbidities...going home on room air today needing some home PT but walking to BR with assistance.

I’m taking my tonic water and zinc...yeah I know what the experts say, not enough to make difference but a liter contains 83 mg’s Quinine or over 1/3 a 220 mg Plaquanil dose(dose effectiveness equivalency uncertain)...but I suspect the zinc and a residual quinine may work to blunt the disease should I get it. Some one has suggested Quercetin as well. I want to be made immune so I can work more freely with my covids clients but I know a vaccine isn’t coming for a while.

Such studies are racist; they imply Israeli, French, Indian, and Spanish studies are not valid. /sarc

The pivot will be a thing of beauty.

The pivot will be: Trump didn't force this through, and people died. They will fold it right into their current "Trump failed" narrative.

Quercetin does appear to be a zinc ionophore. Unfortunately, it has possible interactions with some of Mrs. Chandler’s meds.
