President Trump on Tuesday said his administration will halt funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) pending a review of the global body over its handling of the coronavirus outbreak.
Trump said at a White House briefing that the United States would suspend funding to the organization while officials conduct a review “to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus.”
The president criticized the WHO for opposing large-scale travel restrictions and accused it of failing to quickly vet and share accurate information on COVID-19.
“The WHO’s attack on travel restrictions put political correctness above life-saving measures,” Trump said in the Rose Garden. “The reality is that the WHO failed to adequately obtain, vet and share information in a timely and transparent fashion.”
Trump said last week that he was considering withholding funding to the WHO over the organization’s handling of the coronavirus, accusing it of favoritism toward Beijing and rebuking it for opposing his travel restriction on China. He has also characterized the WHO’s response to the outbreak as sluggish.
Experts have warned that suspending funding for the WHO during a pandemic could have adverse consequences.
Trump’s increased focus on the WHO comes as he undergoes increasing scrutiny for his own response to the virus. The president downplayed the threat of the coronavirus early on in the outbreak, and health experts say that early missteps with testing hampered the overall U.S. response.
Conservatives have also stepped up criticism of the WHO, zeroing in on Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus’s praise of China’s handling of the virus despite reports about efforts by Beijing to conceal the extent of its outbreak.
Trump said Tuesday that his administration would continue to engage with the WHO to see if meaningful reform is possible.

I am deathly afraid that WHO and Chinese will do something in retaliation after the remark the bastard head of WHO said about MORE body bags!! I don’t trust our intel AT ALL!!
This is just the beginning of the coronavirus blowback for China and its minions.
Adverse consequences means flying coach rather than first class.
I sure hope you’re right, they deserve monumental backlash for their actions on this as does WHO for supporting their lies.
They’ll deprive Trump of the benefits of their opinions if he does not pay up.

But, even if it was as China claims (just a natural occurrence), China's negligence makes them look damn near guilty of either arranging it or letting it (the virus) run to other countries instead of giving us fair warning.
The President calls Xi "a friend"...but he knows the CCP is at war with all free countries (with the U.S. leading them all).
We will be lucky if this we can contain this to the non-military arena.
BTW, when the President says we are on a war footing, he's serious...and he's not just talking about the virus.
China locked-down Wuhan for a while, but even that lockdown has been lifted.
I think this is proof our economy will open soon. Focus America on a common enemy, the American people will rally, and negative news about deaths can be focused to another source.

Not too many understand all ‘the dynamics’ playing out as a result of China's underhandedness and how they conduct themselves on the world stage. When Trump announced his run and began speaking about China's manner of how they do business I knew he “gets it”.......when he said “They're tough” it's because they never mean what they say rather their verbiage is always deceptive in every way and top business people understand this.
With this Covid virus I'm certain China's leadership would have no problem with their people dying off until the numbers were so great it could not be ignored by the world leaders..once it was known.
What's interesting is the Chinese know full well their Government sees them as simply production units. And only their elites favor the government because they benefit greatly by being not only cooperative but contributing to the agenda of their “Dear Leaders”.
It's snarky writing like this that makes the media less and less relevant.
I agree and as I remember it may be an outright lie, he took a lot of flak from Dems and the lib media for shutting down China travel right away.
