Why Are Some People So Much More Infectious Than Others? (THE SUPER SPREADER)

Solving the mystery of “superspreaders” could help control the coronavirus pandemic.

(snip) -- As the coronavirus tears through the country, scientists are asking: Are some people more infectious than others? Are there superspreaders, people who seem to just spew out virus, making them especially likely to infect others?

It seems that the answer is yes. There do seem to be superspreaders, a loosely defined term for people who infect a disproportionate number of others, whether as a consequence of genetics, social habits or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

But those virus carriers at the heart of what are being called superspreading events can drive and have driven epidemics, researchers say, making it crucial to figure out ways to identify spreading events or to prevent situations, like crowded rooms, where superspreading can occur.

“Are there superspreaders, people who seem to just spew out virus, making them especially likely to infect others? Hmmmm? Maybe there are superspreaders."

******

Well, well well ….. there certainly could be only a few superspreaders in Michigan ……… at least the ones that spread grass seed, fertilizer, and other lawn items.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer included a link to her executive order a while back, which required big box stores to shut down sections dedicated to items deemed nonessential by the state, including paint, carpet and flooring, furniture, AND GARDENING.

*****

As an aside, ....... WHO in the world can actually prove that anyone is a super spreader?

All you older guys (and ladies) who remember when a kickoff return was ACTUALLY an ESSENTIAL part of an NFL football game rather than just an opportunity for another commercial break, you remember “the wedge” ..... the kickoff team members that unselfishly ran interference for the kick returner ……. THEY REALLY WERE SUPER SPREADERS.

“... whether as a consequence of genetics, social habits ...”

We know from liberals that genetics and behavior never impact anything at all ever. That’s racist and/or homophobic and all of the rest of the bad things! What is the New York Times saying?

#wuflu topic of the day. The claim that one person infected 75 or more at a conference is interesting. What if it was deliberate? How many spreaders are out there and are they out of supplies to infect more people?

Simple cloth coverings for the face just seem like a good idea. It’s not to protect you from germs. It’s to protect others. Super spreader or not, any coughing or sneezing is going to propel some virus. Cloth is sufficient to stop droplets which limit some spreading. Sure, the tiny virus can easily penetrate the cloth, but it needs to be carried a distance and the cloth makes that less likely.

And I say this as someone who thinks we have hugely over reacted to the flu.

Think about this. NYC is a vertical city. Lots of people crammed together in illegal apartments, multifamily dwellings, tenements. With stairwells, elevators. Did the CDC ever issue any guidance tailored for those folks? Folks who can’t socially distance on stairs and in elevators? Whose hones are too small and cramped to isolate a sick family member?

The no masks recommendation was insane from the start.

If anything, it indicates that our scientific betters hold the people they purport to want to help in complete contempt. We’re too stupid to be educable, so we aren’t worth the time.

Meanwhile, ‘Rats like Fredo’s bro and Kaiser Wilhelm turn blind eyes to the illegal/substandard housing issues because NYS needs warm bodies for the census and the ‘Rat party needs voters.

A very clear and well thought out post. Thanks.

As an aside, I was going through an old chest of drawers and found an unopened bag of men's underwear (briefs) that I never used and would have outgrown 30 years ago. I have been experimenting making homemade masks and these things are pretty good raw material... lot's of cutting here and there, but ......

They'll call me the underwear bandit....

;-)

Quick we must round up the super spreaders and burn them at the stake! With these exceptions: muslim, black, brown, illegal invaders, lesbian, gay, transgender and democrat

Detoilet is full of them, that is why they are 13% of the population and over 40% of the Kung Flu cases.

Think about this. NYC is a vertical city.

Good points. The Green people would like everyone crowded into enormous cities so that most of the countryside can be undisturbed and left in a natural state. I don't recall anyone expressing concern that massive, isolated cities might be dangerous petri dishes for disease. But that has to factor into any Megacity model now.
