Disney World Furloughing 43,000 Workers

The action comes after the Florida attraction closed last month because of the coronavirus pandemic. About 200 employees who are considered essential will remain on the job. Walt Disney World in Florida plans to furlough about 43,000 workers after it closed last month because of the coronavirus pandemic, the company and a union coalition representing the workers said. In mid-March, Disney theme parks worldwide closed, including Disney World in Florida and Disneyland Resort in California. The furloughs, which are set to begin on April 19, were part of an agreement between Disney World and the Service Trades Council Union, a collection of six unions representing the 43,000 workers at the theme park resort in Florida. “This is a decision that the union doesn’t like,” Eric Clinton, president of Unite Here Local 362, said on Saturday in a Facebook Live announcement. “However, it’s within the company’s right to lay off and furlough employees in this situation.” Walt Disney World, which includes Animal Kingdom, the Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot theme parks, employs about 77,000 people, according to the union. Disney World draws an average of more than 52 million visitors a year.

Central Florida is a very large service economy. This service has effectively been shut down. It’s going to be a real bloodbath. You’re talking about a huge number people who can’t go without 2 pay checks

Yeah they’re going to get unemployment. 60% of what they are already doing a poor job of living on. Not to mention the economic bloodbath for the unemployment funds. Yep, the feds are going to help, with a whole pile of electronically printed money. The point is that the more you consider the implications, the worse it gets.

Did they start by firing their H1B and other visa holders BEFORE laying off Americans?!

We went to Disneyland in Anaheim, California probably 4-5 times with the Transportation Club over the years the last being about 1978 shortly after we married. We then left that particular part of the industry, and no longer were invited to the low cost events. Haven’t been back to Disneyland since.

Recently saw how much it costs to go there today, and can guarantee we won’t be going anytime soon.

How many H1-B workers would work would be working at Disney World? It would be far too expensive. The up front costs to employ a H1-B are $20k.

I have a DVC reservation for mid-May. The mouse has not told the timeshare owners how their cancelled reservations will be handled... yet.

You did not know Disney not only replaced these Americans with H 1 Visas .

Disney made them train them too or get nothing .

Hello , they are cheap Indian labor and no benefits .

The 20 K one time price is nickels . The entire Accounting dept was wiped out in 2015-16 .
A huge story in central FL .

Those were engineers, not people who work at the park, right. The thing about H1-Bs is they are portable. The day after they start at the company who sponsored them, they can take a job at another compny.

The centerpiece of the new plan is a $600-per-week across-the-board increase in unemployment benefits for all workers claiming them. Given that as of January the average UI check was $385 per week, this is a massive increase

The maximum benefit anyone can earn is $275 per week. Florida’s maximum time for collecting unemployment benefits is capped at 26 week

Disney will not get help for sixteen weeks

How do you figure they won't get help? You just described them getting a lot of help.
