What business is going to be eager to take on debt to expand, or to bring new products to market, when the government has shown them that any capricious, wanna be dictator can shut them down for whatever ginned up reason they create?
The way society rolled over for the Wuhan flu let every would be authoritarian from congress to small town mayor know that the private sector will be a good little puppy dog and do whatever is asked of them. Please government, just make us safe!
You can count on Covid-20 coming sometime before the election so that mail in balloting will be mandatory. And conservatives on FR and elsewhere will preach that this new iteration of coronavirus is the real deal and that shutting down the country is better than dying -- while 40-60k people die each year in this country from the flu.

Traffic is heavier in Metro Atlanta than a week ago. People are just going out and about because they are sick of the lockdown.

They need to go ahead and say that everyone who doesn't live in a shithole can get back to life as normal. That would pretty much include the vast majority of the country that actually works for a living.

I disagree; some restaurants are making it on pickup and takeout only.

The Wuhan virus does not appear to be “a natural phenomenon that has existed for millenia”, any more than the black death has existed for a millenia.
I’m not urging anyone cower in fear, but we MUST remain fact based. And the honest fact is that this particular Corona virus is like nothing we have seen before.
I sincerely apologize in advance for naming them in the same sentence - but President Trump, Germany, France, North Korea and the Chinese Communist party would not have all shut down flights and urged quarantines if this were just the common flu.

The one thing this nonsense has proved is that the vast majority of our population — including many on this site — are sheep. It’s very disturbing...
Very disturbing, but not really as surprising as all that. You don't think Germans were really all that different from us did you?

State powers have been limited by the 14th Amendment and court rulings made under its umbrella, and then by just plain nutso ideological rulings, but there still is such a thing as states’ rights, and a good thing, too. The federalis have gotten scary in recent years. Kudos to Trump for exercising restraint.

The article complains that state governors (rather than the White House) are leading the planning, which has resulted in a mind-boggling level of disorganization, according to a Centers for Disease Control director.
How would this be super disorganized? Texas ends the panic, goes back to work. NY goes full-blown Chicken Little. SO you know, if you live in Texas, go back to your normal routine. If you live in NY, cower in your house all day, and buy as much TP as possible every chance you get.

I disagree; some restaurants are making it on pickup and takeout only.
Some restaurants are barely getting by on takeout. Most aren't, but it at least pays half the bills so they can stay in business a little longer and hope they get past the panic.
The only reason pickup/delivery works for normal restaurants now is because there's no alternative. People are ok with their fancy steak dinner being cold and not perfectly seared/rare because they HAVE to take it home. There are no other steakhouses to get a good steak. People are ok with not going to their particular bar, because there are no other bars to go to. On a normal day, would you ever order bar food for take home? No, it just isn't good once it's started cooling down. Even fast food - would you rather have your Monterey Melt and fries fresh? Or let it sit in the bag for 30min driving it home, so your spicy ketchup barely covers for the lack of warmth in your fries now? The cheese on your burger, that was hot and gooey, is now partially cooled and half-resolidified around the edges of the burger.
It's just not the same. There's a reason only some businesses are generally takeout and others aren't.
