The incident happened late in the evening when the hiker encountered a sow with a cub at close range according to Fish Wildlife and Parks.
The hiker shot the grizzly with a pistol after it attacked and bit him in the thigh.
After the injured bear moved off, the hiker walked back to his house in Dupuyer.
FWP says the grizzlys behavior indicated it attacked to protect her cub from a perceived threat posed by the hiker.
The injured grizzly was found the next morning and euthanized by FWP personnel.

The usual bear apologists make excuses for the bear's behavior. Simply because a bear with cubs encounters a human is not an acceptable reason for the bear to attack the human.
I didn’t see any attempt to help the now mother-less bear cub...
Make a bunch of noise while hiking and these encounters might not happen. Ive walked upon a few black bear sows with cubs and they run when they see humans. This was unfortunate. I am extremely biased against bear hunters as a side note, I find the entire process of baiting and using dogs to be cruel unsportsmanlike.
“Simply because a bear with cubs encounters a human is not an acceptable reason for the bear to attack the human.”
I think you would have a difficult time convincing the Bear of that.
The bear was simply imitating what he had read in the news, of the reaction of some humans to those suspected of having Covid-19. The hiker failed to practice social distancing and therefore the mom was simply protecting her children. You do know the bears read the news don't you (missing graphic)?
They put down the wrong party
He needed a .500 S&W

Fortunately the hiker was carrying a convincer.
They put down the wrong party
..........
Exactly what I was thinking too.
Small orphan black bears seem to do ok around here (rural VA). However they are more likely to become nuisances because they haven't been taught to avoid homes and people.
The biggest killer of bear cubs is adult bears. Boar grizzlys love to kill and eat bear cubs.
‘Go where there are bears then use common sense. Idiot.
Indeed.
My thoughts too about putting down the wrong party.
Whatever caliber he had, it worked.
The bear stopped the attack and ran off.
Our ancestors did not tolerate bears for good reasons.
If we are going to tolerate them, we need to set limits. Bears should not be granted more rights than people.
“The injured grizzly was found the next morning and euthanized by FWP personnel.”
They made a good grizzly out of a bad one.
Execution for defending oneself is an interesting concept.
Perhaps you, or several others who have reinforced that concept can elaborate.
I put grizzly bears and wolves in the same class, moving targets.
“”I find the entire process of baiting and using dogs to be cruel unsportsmanlike.””
Both are legal means used to hunt bears. Where do you get of thinking hunting is a sport? Hunting is not a sport, it’s an instinct we all posses, it’s in our DNA. Humans have walked this earth for many thousands of year and remain at the top of the food chain due to our ability/skills at hunting and killing. Those no right or wrong way. We as hunters actually put restrictions on ourselves simply because we as a species are very adapt at killing. If a species walks this earth today it’s only because we allow it. In the world of humans there’s no need for the big carnivores, we’re perfectly capable of replacing them our selves. I rarely have mountain lions on the ranch simply because they are shot on sight, same with coyotes and feral hogs. They do nothing that I personally can’t do, there’s no need for them.
