The United States on Saturday surpassed Italy in the total number of confirmed deaths from the coronavirus, reaching its deadliest day on Friday with 2,057 deaths. As of Saturday afternoon, the total stood at 20,229.
Already the pandemic has put more than 16 million out of work, forcing President Trump into the difficult choice of reopening the country as the country reels economically from the coronavirus pandemic.
Deaths in the United States per capita remained lower than in Italy, though some experts have warned that geography and population density have helped cushion the United States so far. To date, the virus has killed 19,468 in Italy, or 32 individuals per 100,000 people. In the United States, the number of deaths per 100,000 people was six.

About 49% of the cases and deaths are in NYC. We in LA County have ~ 200 deaths. NYC - 18M population, 60K PER square miles, 3544 deaths (4/6); LACounty - 10M population, 2K PER square mile, 169 deaths (4/6).
Let’s call NYC the epicenter and leave the rest of us alone.
Why, that’s only the same as the average amount of flu deaths a year. Oh wait, that wasn’t supposed to happen. Hmmm...and it’s not over yet.
They have a population of around 60.36 million.

Italy = 116,347 square miles.
USA = 3,797,000 square milers.
And you’re absolutely right about the population difference. Also, most of the cases in Italy occurred in regions with international (i.e. China) travel. The US has more major international transportation hubs than Italy.
NYT buries the lede in the third paragraph. U.S. : 3 deaths per 100K population; Italy: 32 deaths per 100K population. Order of magnitude difference.

What COMPARATIVE PERCENTAGE PER CAPITA have died from
1) the Chinese virus
2) seasonal flu
3) car accidents
The U.S. has a much larger population, a greater geographical area to manage. Moreover, the U.S. has developed the best testing tools, and is conducting the most testing. So deaths attributed to the virus will be much higher.
Moreover, from recent reports it looks like certain states lead by democrats are padding numbers to give higher number of cases.
