A large magmatic eruption is taking place at the volcano right now. Based on satellite imagery, VAAC Darwin spotted a high-level ash and SO2 plume reaching 47,000 ft (15 km) altitude moving WNW.
A strong thermal hot spot is detected as well. Both the webcam on Anak Krakatau Island and from the coast (in 40 km distance) show strong lava fountaining from the volcano.
This seems to be the strongest eruptive phase since the violent phreatomagmatic activity following the partial collapse of the volcano on 22 Dec 2018, which had triggered a deadly tsunami that killed hundreds of people on Java's west coast.
awesome!
Your real name wouldn't be Oogie Boogie would it?
Nice video - but I’m curious about the sound. No delay time between the visual of the eruption and the sound of the eruption. I think the sound was dubbed in. But amazing visual of the eruption at night!
80 Freepers and NOT ONE has told me exactly where Krakatoa is!!! HELLO!
Indonesia - in the strait between Java and Sumatra
Back in the day - around ‘71 we were surveying the Sunda Strait.
SatNav (forerunner to GPS) Doppler Sonar and various other toys. Depth entering the Strait was ~60-70 feet.
Krakatau dead ahead. Just a little black cinder cone no more than 150 feet high with a single small recently sprouted Palm Tree at the shoreline. Boom! The bottom dropped out ... 480 feet. Massive hole in the bottom slowly rising back up to the cone maybe a mile away. A little wisp of smoke but otherwise quiet.
My how it has grown since then. Photos taken then lost over time & travel.
I’ll tell you what’s next...GODZILLA!
Lol. I think he bought a house in Martha’s Vineyard.
THANK YOU!!!!!
Yes! The Day The World Exploded; August 27, 1883.
Neither did the producers of the disastrous 1969 movie, Krakatoa East of Java, which was a bomb even after it went under an assumed name ("Volcano") in second run.
Hollywood is not a reliable source of geographic facts for the most part.
In 1982 this volcano erupted and changed the world’s climate!! iirc.
LMAO,I needed that!
Probably and then throw in a big asteroid impact from nowhere and a major war outbreak. Wait. I have read this book.
1883, and yes, it pretty much cancelled summer in many parts of the world.
I remember the movie as a kid. Krakatoa, East of Java.
Be careful with that powerful thinking.
‘At any time there were three different tornadoes, it just kept going and going for 40 minutes.
‘The whole experience was staggering and the length and variety were astonishing.’
Predictably, these rare spectacles are extremely dangerous.
In 1923, a fire whirl emerged during Japan’s Great Kanto Earthquake and killed 38,000 people in just 15 minutes.
And properly formatted except what happened to your nose?
;-)
